Couldnt handle the stock 1200 auto power anymore so over the weekend i threw in the a14 i rebuilt around a year ago. Just ran a full gasket and seal kit through it during the week. So much nicer to drive. The torque difference is amazing.

The auto goes fine too. Shifts properly and all. I was a little afraid that i would have to fiddle around with an adjustable vacume module. But all is good.

The original matching numbers engine has been wrapped up and stored in the shed. Just 23000miles of age. Waiting for just one day, just one that it might go back in to make it all orginal again.

You just couldn't leave it alone could you. LOL.

I just spent two days in my sons stock 1200 Auto coupe & while it runs perfectly, it just doesn't have the beans for the National Highway system. I kept it at about 3,200 to 3,400 rpm where it seemed happy, but the speedo was reading about 55mph [88kph] on a 68mph [110kph] speed limit.
Gee those big 'B double' trucks push aside a lot of air as they come by at 120+ Kph [75+ mph]
I will concentrate on the suspension, brakes & interior before it gets the A15 with my newly aquired 120Y GX induction & [hopefully] a Jatco 4N71B trans.

The wonderfull twin Hitachi GX induction still pulls very good vacuum which is why your 3N71A trans works so well. You have made a very good selection of components & it should perk up the ole girl just nicely, but realisticly, you now need to transplant a 1200 Coupe brake system in it.
Use the 120Y struts [with 1200 tops], & rear wheel cylinders [smaller bore to stop rear wheel lockup] & dual circuit master cylinder. This should make it a nicely balanced & properly thought out car.

The overdrive in the 4N71B trans & the extra stroke [torque] of the A15 should work well for me in a highway situation. If it still revs too much, I have two more higher diff ratio's that I can use & there's room for even taller tyres.
I'll get this sucker down to about 2,700/2,800 rpm at 100 kph [62 mph] if it kills me.

Thanks.

Yeah i said i would keep her all stock. But it just ended up getting me lol

The brakes really do need some help. Way to much power now for the 4wheel drum single mater cylinder setup. That will be revised shortly. The thing that get me though is that i recently sold a complete 120y pbr setup with brand new pads and shocks just 2000ks old. Didnt think id own two 1200s at the same time.

Have you looked into mating up the 4speed jatco to the A-series bellhousing. That would make it an absolute dream to drive. Imagine the economy, imagine been able to cruise along the highway with the engine reving happy as can be with the stereo and wind of the open window overpowering the exhaust noise.

I was so happy when i shot up the road and it clicked into third gear. I love Su type carbs. So simple yet so versatile.

I contacted a recomended Auto Trans expert in Sydney & he said that, while he couldn't guarantee it, he thought that the original bellhousing may well bolt up to the 4 speed case. He recomended the version from the 4 cylinder Pintara model as it is slightly lighter & does not have all of the lockup converter stuff which just complicates things.

Speaking of driving down the road with the sterio singing to me,................
I believe that I can fit a factory Datsun AM/FM radio in the original dash position & have it look absolutely stock except for the letters 'FM' on the two left side station selector buttons & the sterio/mono button on the right side of the dial face. The little 'Datsun' logo lights up when recieving in sterio FM.
To make it work, I need another original 1200 speaker & it's facia.

I plan on running a suitable exhaust through a cat converter to make this Tiger cub 'purr' so that I can listen to my favorite opera singers on the AM stations. lol.
Gotta be ecologicly responsible too ya know.

You're right about the carbs. For a mild street engine, the factory GX induction is probably the best possible choice. I don't think that anything else really comes close.

Definately keep me informed on the 4speed upgrade. It really would make the world of differnce to have an overdrive to take the edge off the highway rpms.

I like the stereo idea too. Mines still left unmolested and it will definately stay that way. No changing my mind on that. Looks so much neater all standard. I would love to be able to modify a standard front to suit a late model cd/mp3 player. At the moment ive just got one sitting in a coupe parcel tray below the glovebox.

My exhaust is a little more than a purr. 2inch into a single muffler. Not too loud but sounds nice with a bit of a rev.

I thought this 1200 was for your son Chris. You seem to of taken control. lol Wish my dad built me a 1200 like your doing .

My son now needs a bigger vehicle to transport the gear for the band/group. He has my 200B wagon at the moment & we may very well make the swap permanant.

The Radio from a 200B GX is exactly the same as the 1200's AM one [except for AM/FM] & the radio from GX model Series 1 & 2 Bluebirds will do the job very nicely. With the Bluebird one, you need to re-use your AM radios face plate which fits straight on. Some very minor wiring changes are needed & a second speaker so that you can enjoy sterio reception. It's all good & the finished look is undetectable from stock by all except a 1200 nut.

When I was working under the dash a couple of days ago, I found the original AM radio's instruction booklet & waranty card still in its original plastic bag, curled up on top of the radio.
It has sat there undisturbed since 1973.

When I am finished fixing it up, I may give it to my daughter, which means that I will need another set of wheels.
1600 wagon anyone? Anyone?

I know you think you are re- inventing the wheel. But N12 pulsar AM/FM Datsun radio into 1200 dash has been done many times over the years. Just like the VL Jatco
