Looking at the 'bump' in the tailhousing where reverse gear sits, this appears to be an early box. Also the lower bolt holes in the bellhousing look very small (6mm?) as per the early boxes. What size is the hole where the clutch cable passes through? I've got a stck of various old A series boxes - never seen one like this though. Could it be for an A10? (haven't seen one of those to my knowledge)

Here in NZ we have (had?) two styles of 4-1 extractors available.
1. "twin carb" - centre two pipes (ie 2&3) go over the two outers (1&4). To suit twin sidedrafts (Webers/Delortos etc)
2. "Single carb" - centre two pipes go under the outers. Suit std single carb manifold.

I've used both. Same pipe diametre. Don't think the single carb style would flow quite as well due to them needing to 'tuck' down a little tighter where they exit the head. Having said that I'd say they run well with GX set-up.

Surely someone must have a decent one lying around. I must have half a dozen - if I was closer I'd give one to you.

Sikyne's on the money.

Many don't realise this is an important part of how the cooling system works. Block pressure created between the pump and thermostat (or restricter) is what greatly assists the coolant picking up heat (then taking it to the radiator to be dissipated).

This is why you should never run an engine with no thermostat - the water temp reading may come down but that's simply because its not collecting heat from the engine.

GA16 engine vs A series

Saw this engine listed for sale (wishing I'd bought it now). GA16 for sale/sold

The comments from the seller are that "A" series gearbox bolts straight up.

GA16s have 76 bore and 88mm stroke (not so keen on the latter aspect). Apparently around 105HP std.

Does anyone know much about these engines? Wonder if the bellhousing pattern for this example had somehow been modified? (this would be an unusual?) Wonder how far off the head gasket pattern is from an A series? (bore is comparable) Are the heads a good design?

Food for thought.

You gotta remember that modern engines have vastly superior breathing than our old motors do. The more air you can get into, and out of a motor, the more power it will make. The new abath fiat 500 makes 160 with a turbo 1400. (remember, thats a production car, and not too highly strung) that wouldn't be too difficult to acheive with a modern cylinder head design.

Renault were even doing this power with 1400 turbo Pushrod engine in the early 1980s. "the standard Renault R5 Turbo has a front-mounted engine, the 5 Turbo featured a mid-mounted 1397 cc Cléon turbocharged engine placed behind the driver in mid-body in a modified Renault 5 chassis. In standard form, the engine developed 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp)."

These engines even had the same bore and stroke as an A14.

Nice looking set up.
What sort of spec are speedway engines like this and what sort of HP/RPM are they making?

They'd be great on a properly downported (race) head. Bottom picture looks good.

Thanks - keep the ideas coming.

I ran shortened L16 valves in my previous engine and they were fine.

Ideally am after S/S valves along the lines of what this engine has been running. ie S/S, 40mm head, 8mm stem, waisted stems.
