Wide ratio (3.7:1 first gear same as 4 speed); or Close ratio (2.6:1 first gear)?

I've seen plenty of cars run without one if it's any consolation.

Rating has been related to 7.5. With the way the Richter scale works apparently it had 50 times(!) the energy of the 2011 earthquake which did so much damage to Christchurch. Whilst unfortunately it's created plenty of damage, it was a bit deeper and also centred in a less populous area.

The best ratio 'boxes I've had were two Ultra-close (2.169:1 1st gear) 56As but unfortunately each eventually broke, and I'm only running a mild 1300.

Dave - what are the ratios of Bettany gears 60A kit?

Your Engineer is pulling your leg! No way is that acceptable practice. (My 2c...)

For 4 cylinder engines I reckon the "rule of 9" is simplest. ie :
Valve 1 fully open - adjust valve 8 (1+8=9);
Valve 2 open - adj 7
And so on

Sounds like a very cool car based on the description particularly its history. Suggest find out what gearbox it's running - if it's a 56a 'box it would be marginal in terms of strength behind that engine especially with the 'no slippage' nature of a twin plate clutch and lock Diff. If it's a 60 or 63 based 'box it will likely be ok - if it's one of these with just standard ratios bear in mind the gear spacing isn't generally ideal for racing but may be ok if it's a good torquey engine.
