Have a CA and the starter seams to throw out but doesn't spring back every time. Ring gear teeth are ok and so is the pinion on the starter. Any thoughts?

Sounds like the solenoid is sticking, Take it apart, clean it up and it should be fine.

Are you sure your starter is a CA18DE/DET one?

I don't know of any others that will fit. A 180B will bolt in.. but it has the wrong gear pitch and you'll end up breaking the nose off the starter motor.

I went through 2 starter motors in 1993 before finding this out.

If the starter makes a whizzing sound, it is a bad overruning clutch. In this case, replace the starter drive gear assembly.
