I've got a R33 dash cut + shut into my ute. To convert mech. speedo to elec., you need a Hall effect sensor. It screws in where the cable thingo would usually go on the transmission and You just run the wires up into the interior.

This is the only website I can remember online w/ the hall effect:
http://www.autometer.com/cat_accessoriesdetail.aspx?vid=114

I am getting a Hall effect + the adjustable speed box thing for $300 which is pretty good.
Have a hunt around websites, you might be able to find a bargain for one.
