I just bought a Morris minor van with a A12 motor and auto transmission. It appears that the rear welch plug in the block is leaking.
Tried copper stop leak but no good...
I either need to remove the engine or the tranny to get at it. Should I just pull the hole engine /trans together? or would it be easier to remove the trans and work underneath?
Thanks Frank

I would think that pulling the engine and trans out is a good idea. You've just bought the car, there are a lot of "unknowns". If it's a bit faulty in the welch plug department, then there may be other things that need a look at too.

Pull the engine/GB out, and replace the rear crankshaft oil seal while you are at it.

It's possible you could do the work by pulling just the gearbox, But we can't see the transmission tunnel clearances on the old Morrie, so it's hard to say if you will have "working space" to access the welch plug.

Pulling both out will allow you to give everything a good degrease, so you can spot future oil leaks etc. This might be a good time to do an oil change, and trans fluid change too.

When you've done all of this, you can feel safer in going on long trips, were reliability is important.

Oh yeah..and working under cars is horrible work. If you don't have a dry garage to work in, I will guarantee you that the temperature will drop 5 degrees, and torrential rain will start soon after... making it impossible to finish the job in under a week. With the engine and gearbox out, such bad weather won't happen.

Cheers,
Chris.

Kegs's father has lots of experience with Morry's and A series engines, I am sure when Kegs next comes online he will glady pass on some info on whether its easier to seperate them or remove them as one.
