Can someone bring me up to speed on the H145 & H150 diferentials [not the whole rear axle]
Both are available in the 3.9 to 1 ratio, but are these 3rd members [the diff center] interchangeable in a 1000, 1200 or 120Y axle housing?
Is the H150 any stronger than the H145?

Authaurative replies are eagerly sought.

The H150 is stronger due to physically larger ring & pinion. Nissan used the H145 only behind A10 & A12, but used the H150 behind A15s.

I don't think the H145 axle housing will fit a H150 center section, but it is a good question. Anyone know for sure?

Yes they will fit I have a 3:7.1 H150 out of a 1.5 Sunny in my coupe housing..

Thanks blokes. The info is going to be very usefull.
Regardless of what engine i run in the little coupe, i will need to run the 1000 rear axle as all the models that were made after it are wider & my wheels & tyres are a perfect fit now. I wish i had known about the 3.7 to 1 ratio before, as i was always looking for another gear once my sedan had gotten into cruise mode on the highway.

It was the ratio problem that propelled me to try the 205/60/13 tyre size. I might have used 195's instead if i hd enough gear. Then again,..... perhaps not.

Thanks again. It looks like i will be looking for a sunny 3rd member in the new year.

I checked with my Datsun dealer & he confirms that the diff gasket is the same for 1000's, 1200's imported 120Y's & Sunny's.
He also confirmed that the 3.7 ratio was used in the A15 equiped Sunny wagons. I wish that i had known that 20 years ago.

Now i only hope that the side gears use the same spline as the 1000 & 1200 axles. I'm betting that they do.

hey,dodgeman,how you doing.a friend of mine called grant (the one that made the throttle linkage)fitted a h150 diff into a h145 housing in his 1200 sedan a couple of years ago.being the methodical little bugger he is,he found he needed a 2 mm plate to go between the housing & the centre to get the axle & the splines lined up.by the way,that sunny wagon ratio,was it for a14 powered wagons as well,cause there's one of those at rushes,& it might be worth looking at.oh,well,maybe i'll do that this afternoon,instead of vegging out.will let you know.

I am well, but i think i have bad news for you.
According to my parts man, who had been at the dealership dealing with Datsun stuff since 1000's were new, the 3.7 to 1 ratio was used in the last of the Sunny wagons that were fitted with the A15 engine. It would seem that the A14 powereed ones had 3.9 to 1 ratio diffs.

If i can come up with a factory Sunny workshop manual, it should give us the good oil.

I would look foward to hearing what you find.
I do not know it there is some sort of code on the third member that discloses the ratio within, but i hope so. Can anyone help with this.

I am surprised about the 2mm spacer as Stirlingmac had not mentioned it, yet he runs one in his 1200 coupe.

If I go with plan "B" & run the CA16DE, with OD 5 speed & the 3.7 diff, it will be one very nice & economical cruiser, & cruisin' is where it's at [for me] With a 7.9 gallon tank @ 40mpg i should get a comfortable 275 to 300 miles between pit stops. [About450 to 480k] Thats my style of driving.

I have a sunny manual that covers the usa and uk models,it shows the usa models with A15 as the only sunny to have 3.7 ratio diff,the rest (A12 and A14) have 3.889 to 1. I don't have an oz manual so I can't speak for our sunny's.

Thanks for the info. It would seem that your info matches what my parts man said. That means that one is going to be a bit harder to find. Never mind, thats half the fun.
You are right about the 3.889 to 1 ratio. I had rounded the number up to the first decimal place.

If you look at the name plate in the engine bay the trans axle listing gives the transmission type and then the following codes for the axle assembly.
HA =H150, HB = H150A, HC = H165B,

HD = H190 Aluminium carrier with either 24 diam 23 spline or 30 diam 29 spline side gears,

HE= H190 ML cast iron carrier,

HF = H190A ML cast iron carrier RE-INFORCED!

HG n= H233B, RA R160,RB =R180, RC = R200, CA = C200, CB = C216

After the Numbers the next two numbers give the diff ratio.
EG HC 39 = H165B centre with 3.8889 ration

HD 43 = Alloy carrier H190 with 4.375 ratio (May have 23 spline or 29 spline axles.
