SSS replica? I think they'll have a hard time getting 18K.. It's basically just a race-ready A15-converted 1200 sedan with a few extra modifications.

It's fitted out like an SSS, notably with the twin Dellortos and the broad stripes on the bonnet. Looks good and equipped well

I just don't see it as a "replica" when all it has is a SSS styled bonnet. Awesome looking car, but 9/10 it's an FJ/CA/SR or rotary-powered 1200 going for that sort of money.

I think that you are being a bit hard on this car to say the least. Apart from not having the high back seats its a pretty honest replica of the real deal- and a really nice example at that. I think that it is very realistically priced- the going rate for a nice, bog standard 110 (if you were lucky enough to find one ) would be around NZD$8000. Then it all starts- try pricing up building a decent A15 build complete with sidedraughts and exhaust, 5 speed gearbox and a genuine Nismo LSD. Then theres all the suspension upgrades, wheels, tyres, steering geometry to sort, not to mention the cost of a nice paintjob to get it to the original SSS colours and I think that you will be well over $20000... Price comparisons, a cobber of mine in Nelson sold a 'tidy' Mk2 Escort Sport earlier this year for $15000 and there were plenty of people climbing over themselves to get it or try buying a 240Z under $30000 and see how you get on, or for that matter any form of decent Datsun 1600. Cars of this era are really starting to move pricewise and the days of the bargins are well and truly over, although I would hasten to add that it is a very fickle market and can be hard work at times but ultimately these cars are trading. Cheers Dave

It's far from stock - there's no H160 either to my knowledge. The 1200 isn't exactly well-known and iconic in comparison to the S30 and 510, and it's pointless and unrealistic to compare it to a MKII Escort. The 1200 is a cheap, mass-built economy car, they'll never sell for close to the aforementioned. Not being hard on it, it's a faultless car. But I can't see it selling for that much, or any time soon at least.

1) No one ever implied it was stock- it is being sold as a competitive and sorted race car 2) The add actually states its got an H160 (165 )complete with Nismo LSD 3) Saying the 1200 'isn't exactly iconic or well known in comparison to the S30 or 510 '- maybe in the US market but I would seriously beg to differ on that opinion in other markets. 4) I would have thought an Escort Sport would have been an excellent example for a price comparison- what on earth do you think an Escort is if not Ford's cheap, mass built economy car of the 1970's? The only Escort that is afforded 'iconic' status is the BDA and they are selling for well over $100,000 NZ- going rate for a 'new'replica is around $150,000.
Of course you are entitled to your opinion, just as everyone else is on this forum and time will tell whether or not you are right but what I can tell you is that Feral Errol was of the opinion that the 1200's that would be worth the most in the future was those with A series engines, essentially unmolested and this car, a very good replica of a model that only 850 odd units were ever produced, fits into that category nicely.

Quote: I just don't see it as a "replica" when all it has is a SSS styled bonnet. That's what an SSS is: a modded A12 engine with a cosmetic package. It was a difficult sell in 1973 (only sold about 800 units), but it's one of the great Datsun specials c. 1974: Datsun 1200 SSS at the "Shell 200" race

I can see both sides of the argument, but to me a replica needs to be original spec not a highly modified road racer. If all it takes is twin sidies, there's a million SSS replicas out there, just missing a couple of squares of black paint.
On the Escort comparison, anytime there's an iconic/hero/high performance version of a car, that increases the prices of the base model versions. You see it with Escorts, old Mazda 808s, Capellas, Datsun 240Ks, etc. Maybe there's something of that in NZ due to their local 1200 SSS variant, or maybe he's just trying to cash in on the cred gained by Murph owning one? :P Really, even the JDM GX5 isn't a hero model imo. Maybe to the Japanese who grew up watching TS Cup, but it has next to no exposure internationally. Nothing like the Escorts. In Aus, there's definitely no comparing the value of a 1200 to an Escort! The only thing driving 1200 prices up here is the big dollars people spend on CA/SR street machines, the old school JDM craze, or trying to ride the coat tails of 240K and Zed prices...
