Too bad you won't be here late august through early september. Then you could stop at the Bonniville salt flat durring speed week and see all of those trying for land speed records. As far as older Datsuns, I hate to bust your bubble, there aren't that many left unfurtunatly. It's kinda sad that all there is for sale any more are old Z cars for more than they cost new. anyway good luck in your trip and welcome.

Well, if you are going to go 500 miles north of San Francisco to go to a meet and then back to Route 66 to head east you will have already done 1000 miles before you start.

I would suggest taking I-80 to Salt Lake City then dropping down I-15
Southbound and then going across I-70 to Denver. That is one of the nicest and most scenic drives in the US. Then either go back North to I-80 or South to I-40. There is a lot of history and scenic "touristy stuff" on either route.

moderately reliable and room to sleep so van or wagon. are cars like this cheap in the states?

Yes, you can get an early 90s minivan or wagon for $1500.

Renting a new car for seven weeks can be had for the same price.

yeah well i got a little bit of time to work it out, dont wanna lock anything in too solid either.
emailing a few different places at the moment, if i can get away with $2000 rental for 6-7 weeks (or even less, dont need a car the whole time) i'll be pretty stoked
bit iffy about the stickers, dont wanna be too upfront haha

Didn't think you were packing much upfront, mainly packing it in the rear
