are you getting a 3 layer pearl? the pearl will always hold up it is the clear that will get scratched just like any car does. when the peral is sprayed it is sprayed over the basecoat(color) then pearl then the clear hence the name 3 layer pearl.

You must use a daaaam lot of pearl.
Pearls can be mixed with the colour or more commonly are mixed in the clear.
Pearl is only paint. So it will only hold up aswell as normal paint does.

Before you go the white base with pearl, I recommend you check out a few cars painted white with pearl. I dont think I have ever seen a car painted white with pearl that didnt just look like dirty white paint. Check some out and see if you like it before you paint it.

When i had my corolla repainted white with a blue pearl it turned out a bone colour with blue pearl, which still turn heads but still a dirtier colour then what i wanted.

Be sure you get what you want!!!!

I have used pearl on a car mixed into the paint not in the clear and it came up quite good It also means you get a perfect paint ratio to pearl ratio and the clear is just clear which make touch ups a lot easier. I never tried to touch it p though cause it was on my race ute in townsville and we did a colour change on it after about 2 years as we need to fix all the panel damage from racing. As for white as a base and then pearl I think it might be ok is you mixed the pearl into a bright white paint but all the perals I have seen that have been in the clear coat have looked really dirty, this is generally because celar coat goes off after a while in the sun and changes the colour of the paint. similar to pine when it is clear vanarished and goes yellow after a year or two. I don't know of any clears that will not do that, though you could ask some panel beater I guess. My friend in townsville did his rx7 in a white but actually tinted the paint so it was slightly green which make the car look similar to glow paint colour with the gren and blus pearl over it, it looks pretty good as it hasen't gone a noticable dirty eggshell colour as the green masks the clear gong off.

Anyway just my to cents worth.

The better quality clears like Glasurit don't yellow. Best pearl paintjobs, simply use a pearl of a few shades lighter or darker of the same colour base coat. It gives the paint lots of depth. Mixing it in the clear means you look through the pearl. Mixing it in the colour, masks the pearl effect as the light isnt going through it to reflect. Sometimes this is more desireable as it gives a subtle pearl effect.
