thanks heaps for the help I was thinking that the problem would be condensation from the night air affecting the points but I have bought a can of water dispersing spray and a can of "Start Ya Bastard" just in case, I have a pair of Navara headlights fitted with the yellow/blue bulbs that some mates have said could be draining the battery more than the alternator can recharge it?

Another thing I have noticed is the spark plugs are NGK BP5ES which I am told are the hottest plugs for the A series motors, would this be making the motor harder to start when it is cold? I am going to try setting the points gap to the minimal clearance and set the plug gap to the minimal clearance then adjust the valve clearances to the hot clearances when the engine is warm, then set ignition timing then carb idle speed then re check everything again, I had a few moments in the morning when the car would miss under hard acceleration, I have a new radiator and new thermostat so once warm the engine sits at just under half on the scale I am not sure if the miss is ignition related or carb related but the fuel level is spot on in the sight glass

Have you tried the "Bucket O' Hot Water" yet?

no not yet But I just discovered another screwed up thing, when I pull the choke out it makes no difference to the idle speed I have no auto choke just manual, it is opening and closing properly though

The plug range only matters when the combustion chamber is hot. Will not affect starting at all (unless they get fouled or overheated, so take a look at them).

That's really odd, that is where I would start looking.

The linkage may have come away from the back of the carb that controls the fast idle, it happened on my partners car.
