Ok I am ready to start looking at my options for a suspension and brake package for my 1973 B110 sedan auto.
I have one option so far, it consists of datsun 120Y front struts with some firm springs with some firm gas shocks, overhauled calipers and dba rotors, if they are made for 120Y brakes.
At the back I feel the rear drums are sufficient but a set of JTS springs would help cornering and some gas shocks should do the trick.
I don't mind a roughish ride as long as it corners better with less dive under braking and less body roll.
I currently have a master cylinder with two reservoirs and am led to believe this is the master cylinder I need for the 120Y brakes?
Does any body have some other options I should look at? I called a wrecker here and can get a set of 120Y struts and brakes for $100 so I figure thats a good starting price. I will also get a 120Y swaybar for the front while I am there

I understand with an adapter plate you can use Silvia calipers and rotors on a 120Y strut. (Heard it on this forum but haven't actually done it)

The bare strut is the same for the 1200 coupe & the 120Y [Aust built cars from July '76 excepted] & so are the disc brakes. Springs too if i'm not mistaken, so these parts will provide you with a stock upgrade, but use the 1200's upper spring seat [the bit that bolts to the body] to avoid raising the front.
The 1200's dual circuit master cylinder has the same specs for both drum- drum & disc- drum cars, but you should remove the residual pressure check valve from the front brake circuit of the cylinder [the rear part of the cylinder] or alternately splash out & get a new disc brake one.
Datsun also used a smaller bore rear wheel cylinder on the disc brake cars & these are available new at rediculously low prices [under $20] so I would recomend that you get, & fit, a pair of these too in order to avoid embarrasing rear wheel lockup in the wet.

Pedal pressures are higher in a stock disc brake car & this might be the last straw for well used original cylinders, so plan ahead.

This would be regarded as an entry level upgrade, but if you are running a stockish engine & don't do stupid things, it should be just fine.

Talk to Neil [Dattoman_1000] as he is the resident brake specialist in your area & he will give you the good oil on rotor availability, component selection, & he is also very helpfull to club members on parts pricing.

well I have just bought a race head with twin mikunis and a hot cam so am thinking power should be about 100hp so thats why I planned to rebuild the 120Y brakes, but as mildman pointed out there is a silvia brake conversion plate available somewhere which would help heaps. My master cylinder looks new but I will still replace it for peace of mind.
I have 13" rims with 155/70/R13 tyres so I need to find out if the silvia discs will fit inside the mags but even if they don't fit a standard 120Y brake upgrade in good condition is a bit better than drums hey?
would I be wasting my time with the 120Y struts upgraded with lower firmer springs and shocks if I am hoping to better the cornering characteristics, the reason I am liking the 120Y conversion is the easy bolt up nature of the conversion

Any improvement in suspension & brakes is never a waste of time, but why the pizza wheel tyre size. I have addopted 185x60x13 as a minimum substitute standard for the front of 1000 to 120Y models & are quite legal on rims as narrow as 5".
If you were using stock 13" steel rims from a 180B or similar, then 175x65x13 are legal down to 4-1/2" rims & both have an outside diameter that is close to the original 12" tyre. Either of these has to be a big safety upgrade over what you have now.

My Late model 120Y PBR brakes pull up hard!! they work great for what they are! i have the booster aswell. For a CA18DET conversion 120Y or 1200 coupe struts & discs are legally sufficient and have great stopping capablities, just not repeatedly in a short period of time the 120Y Brakes have suprised us a couple of times as to how well they stop. the Silvia brake up grade is a Kev Rowley Special, i have pictures in my album of them. As mentioned before use the strut top originaly from your car, the ones you see through the strut tower top. So the 120Y brakes are great i reckon.

Since I'm doing research...

What are the most popular / most effective brake and strut upgrades for 1200 / 210 etc?

some won't apply to the 210, like putting sunny disks on, i know.

trying to put together a table of upgrade options, and stuff.

only worrying about fronts here...

1000/1200 - 4 wheel drums:
120Y ( sunny ) brakes
next option - see below...

b210/210,etc.. front disks - rear drums
Stanza / 810 brakes - are these the easiest to do?
280z - use your current strut top? - second easiest
280zx / S13 / 240sx - front strut and brake swap - easy if you make coil overs or swap spring perch
280zx / S13 / 240sx OPTION2 wilwood calipers - need adaptor

what other common ones are there?
rear brakes table is easier...

Bang for buck Kev's Silvia brake upgrade is your best option. I have had them on for a couple of years and they have no problem pulling up my ute from 200km/h plus out at Queensland Raceway lap after lap.

As money has become availale I have rebuilt the calipers, fitted slotted rotors and Pagid pads and I have always used top quality brake fluid. These improvements have helped but even in standard form they were brilliant.
Regards Matty

ok I am heading down to the wreckers to buy the 120Y struts, does anybody know the part number for the new disc brake master cylinder with out the residual presure check valve?
Can someone suggest a front spring and shock combo? king springs? koni shocks? I would like the car to sit a bit lower too, would someone please let me know how to get into contact with JTS so I can order a set of rear springs and lowering blocks.
I will rebuild the stock 120Y brakes now with PBR or DBA products and see how they go, I will go with your tyre size that you suggested dodgeman as I have just realized that 2 tyres are diferent profiles cheers for all the help
