I have made a kit to put a Datsun 1200,210 or B210 transmission in an Austin Healy Sprite or MG Midget but I have a question that you Datsun folks can probably answer: I have a couple of starter motors (Datsun) but one is 6 1/2" long from the flange to the back end and the other is about 7 1/2" long. The short one works in my conversion but the long one hits the oil filter and won't work. The parts stores just list the long one as a replacement (they both will fit the "A" block Datsun). Does anyone know how to buy the short one?

there is an MT / MT Gear Reduction and AT starter, so there are 3 kinds.

the biggest one is the MT gear reduction starter, it nearly hits the engine mount. the AT and MT ones are the same other than the pinion gear.

sounds like you want the MT non gear reduction kind, that's what you'd get by default unless you lived in canada where they tend to have the gear reduction kind ( for AT??? )

Thanks for that info-
I cleaned up the short one and found a part number on it, it is: S114-160B with 609 on the line below.
The long one doesn't look like it should be a reduction unit from the outside (it is round, not obllong) but I will pull it apart and see.

AT
supposedly there is a 1.2kw gear reduction one for the AT, but I can't get a pic of either AT starter. I can tell you that AT's seem to have 9 teeth.

it's funny that they're so vague about these starters since there are 2 tooth pitches. it seems that if you want an AT starter it'll say AT.

Both of mine look just like the Regular MT but the one is just shorter and neither have the sheetmetal cover over the brushes, just a solid metal case.

The "Regular MT" one in the picture is the Hitachi model. Just get a starter for a B210 or B310, most likely you'll get the Mitsubishi which is a better one anyways.

I'm wondering why it hits the oil filter. Did someone put the "large" Ford 'F1' style filter on it? A-engines always have a small diameter filter, but you fit the larger filter by cutting a tiny bit off the oil pan flange.
