I'd recommend you cut your teeth on an A14/15 installation first before diving into a FJ/CA/SR/elton motor.

Get some practice pulling engines in and out of cars and what can go wrong.

Then at least you might get some use out of your Datsun this year, otherwise it might become a never ending project.

Mildman has got it right...
and also i really recommend you spend the money on brakes and suspension setup before doing the transplant...get the thing handling and stopping really well first....it will be thourougly enjoyable driving a car which handlingly far out weighs power. Once that is done then go for the big converstion.
When i did my SR20 I pulled the motor / box in and out 14 times before I finally got the alignment setup right. Pain in the ass...
BTW Maddat do conversion kits for the CA18 only not SR or the FJ so will be on your own...unless your really committed to it especially with $$$ you will end up selling it and tossing $$$ out the door.
It will cost minimum $10k for you to have an engineered FJ20 DE on the road.(not including body work , wheels etc etc...just the converstion)
Go the work A15 twin weber setup first...please please please....

Good to see such varied responses!

I don't think the fj I am looking at is going anywhere quick, and I do appreciate the advice with a nice 'a' block. So bluebird struts, lock diff, a mild 'a' block and a paint job will be my path for the time being. I've got a sr20det in my 180sx so that will have to be my turbo fix for the time being. I have done a few engine swaps in a Mazda 1800 - giving it a 626 2L and five speed - but that was only due to things going bang so I have my hands slightly dirty aswell as spending many a night tinkering down at AFR. Also I'll have my good mate gx1200 helping me with tech stuff along the way!
Thanks heaps guys - this is the advice I was looking for!

Adam - got any a15 short motors lying around??

yeah, FJ in a 1200 is not a nice swap. They're just too heavy.. The A15 will be far more satisfying...not as cool and scary, but quicker and more satisfying....

I've got one in bits that requires assembly - $1500 and I'll chuck in a 1000 coupe with a 6 point cage

But seriously, I think City Dismantlers MAY have one. Take a fat wallet though... but you know that.

It's very good - no rust at all, but theres a bit of a scrape down the left rear 1/4 that needs proper treatment.

I'm trying to convince the missus to let me finish it, but failing that, I'll have to sell it
