i have been doing a little bit of research on this and rang main roads and the only legal size for a 1200ute is the 1400 single overhead cam. but im not sure. it seems as tho there are ALOT of CA18det motors in 1200's in queensland. so im abit confussed myself

i dunno about the amount of cams and their placment goes effecting your engineering....
the 2.5 x cars weight for forced induction and 3 x cars weight for NA is correct for NSW aswell.....thats the only rule ive ever heard.

Its rather simple to answer. Look HERE and find the engineer that is closest to you, or any that you can visit and ask them what is the biggest engine they will engineer that will meet the DOT's approval. An engineer can engineer any size motor in any car, but this does not meet the DOT's rules. Make sure to state that it is for a legally road registered vehicle.

1.4 litre is the biggest size engine most Australian state DOT's will allow you to fit without engineers report.
Dont bother with what the DOT tell you. I once visited a NSW RTA branch to pay for rego on a datsun that had earlier that day been Certified by an Engineering Signatory, and the person at the counter in the RTA branch didnt know how to process the registration because they didnt know what an engineers certificate was.

When we use the formula and say the max cc's for weight is 1.8turbo and 2l N/A can the engineer still, if he see the vehicle suitable engineer something bigger? 13bt, sr20det etc.

Any engine can be engineered into any car if you have enough time and money to make your car satisfy associated design rules. This is a far more complex process than a "simple" and legal CA18DET or 2L N/A conversion which the department of transport classifyies as a "complex" modification.

the smartest option would be to build up a smaller engine like a a14 or a15 which actually have got a bit of power by the way its legal cost worthy and lots of fun!

hey all, have just been lookin up this exact info however. the compliance plate on my 1200 ute claims that its GVM is 1315kgs, 1/2t ute. The plate hasnt been tampered with in anyway but was wondering if maybe it has beentaken from another Datsun ute and placed onto my 1200. is there anyway to tell. is there a specific code that i should be reading that will tell where the plate originated? any help would be appreciate :)
