Yup, changed the oil. Topped it up with the oil i use everytime, Castrol GTX.
Talked to the David Gray (my main man at the engine shop) and he says that a good test will be to get it to operating temp then whip the rocker cover off and look on the rocker ass. or underneath the rocker cover for beads of water, isolate the area (front or back) then we know where its coming from.
Im most likley gona have to pull the head again to get it pressure tested to see if theres any cracks in it at all... not looking forward to this!

I also thought that maybe the water pump and timing cover gasket mite be shagged thus letting water in but highly likley as i cant see any oil or water dripping from the bottoms of either.

Oh there isnt any welch plugs in the front of the a series is there? like behind the timing cover? I cant remember and i dont have any donks stripped down in the shed...

Getting confusing now

Dave, did you make sure that all the sh!t was cleaned out of the head stud bolt holes in the block? You can get a build up in those holes and when you put the head studs back in & torque them up they 'bottom out' before tightening down properly on the head.
I take it you checked the head to make sure it wasn't warped...this can happen real easy to these heads if they have been overheated.

This might not be the case, but is your oil feed to the rockers through the no.1 head stud or the seperate feed hole in the block.

Because if it is through the head stud then the head gaskets that main brands such as Durapro make dont remove the little copper ring that sourounds the oil feed in the block (which should be pluged in the case that you have the feed through the head bolt)

So there for if this little unused ring isnt removed then it can cause the head to sit very slightly on an angle and there for water can leek from the jackets into the oil feed bolt as it is quite close to the center water jacket.

Hope this helps

My 1200 did the same thing with the 'milkshake' turns out my head was warpen by 12 thou so water was mixen with the oil. So i had 2 get the head machined flat $120 and a new head gasket kit $50 and a change of oil and oil filter, but now she runs sweet!

ohh yeh so what im pretty much trying to say is remove the little copper ring vary carefully with a razor blade. that is if your oil feed is through the head stud.

I dont have a straight edge so no i did not check but the car hasnt been overheated at all, well not that i know of and the head was plugged up (water galleries on outside as im running twin sidedraughts and no water galleries on the manifold) and the head was pressure tested and decked then so im assuming it cant of warped in at least 200k of running!
The stud holes im not sure i didnt look in them but the head bolts only had oil residue on them when i pulled them out...

Chris1200t, I have an A15 head (H89) so do these heads im pretty sure feed thru the rockers and smaller head bolt and just up thru the rod holes.. anywhere else?

Im going to pull the head tommrow and see if i can see anything else, its a pain in the arse but its what we have to do to keep our Datsuns alive hey!

Bugger it to hell...

Hey Dave,
sorry to hear of the problem persisting - I know your pain!! It sounds like you will have to look closely at the head (pressure test) to ensure any porting has not ventured thru water jackets. It could be very minor as it doesn't take much water to discolour oil. Also check your timing cover !!!! 30 odd years of oxidisation takes its toll - could be a tiny pinhole behind your pump. Hold it up to the light for best results.
Good luck mate.
Cheers

Ok an update, got the head pressure tested and checked today. No leaks at all, wasnt warrped and performned fine.... damn

So its back to the drawing board, i had a talk to the bloke and at worst its a hole in the block/water passages but this is the worst of worst scenarios but the most identifiable as there are really no other places where water can mix with oil. Unless my water pump/timing cover are mixing??

Any thoughts guys? I think its time to give up on Datsuns for a while then come back to them when i have a reliable one that loves me back

Cheers
Dave
