Sorry for asking such a stupid question, but which direction does the bolt holding the pulley have to be turned to get it undone?

I tried to get the pulley of a seized engine, so it should have been easy, now the engine isnt seized but the nut is still tight.

Any hints for stopping the engine turning on a motor lying on the ground.
