Next job in the Coupe is the EFI fuel system.

Here's the kind of idea I want to go with, mounted internally on the boot floor of the coupe - rather than externally.

It needs to feed a tuned CA18DET on the race track - so have a couple of pump decisions to make.

I'm thinking of going Carter for the lift pump as I think it can handle being mounted above the level of the fuel tank...but I'm not sure of the flowrates and pressures to use. I am thinking a Carter silver which is 100gallon/hr, 6-8psi should be the go.

Is a Carter Black 100gallon/hr and 15psi overkill?

Then I was planning to run an 044 Bosch EFI (save me ever upgrading again).

And about a litre of surge tank....

For those of you with CA18DETs with some mods (who also maybe race them) - what have you found sucesssful / unsuccessful.

I think the carter silver and black are actually the same price - but I'm also not sure if more pressure could actually be a bad thing in the lift pump.

I'm running a bosch VL turbo / VN V8 pump external high pressure and a volvo intank pre pump, and a 1L surge tank, under the car above the diff. no dramas so far. if you have a look at my handbrake piccy you can see the stainless surge tank. i have a 3/8 ryco filter between the pre pump and surge tank, and a EFI filter (EA ford i think) between the HP pump and manifold.

The pressure rating on the pumps actually means that it can pump the rated flow rate with a resistant pressure of X. That means that your 100gallon/hr 15psi pump will pump more volume than the 100gallon/hr 6-8 psi pump at any given pressure. It doesn't mean that there is more pressure "in" the lift pump. In the surge tank situation you probably have very little system pressure because it has an overflow fitting to atmospheric pressure as well as an engine removing fuel from the tank at the same time.

I think you'll find that whatever lift pump you choose will handle your requirements. The only calculation that may be worth doing would be perhaps comparing the motors maximum fuel usage rate to the lift pump flow rate.

ie the CA18 injectors are 370cc per min. so 4 at maximum duty cycle are requiring 1480cc per min. 100gallans/hr is ~ 6300cc per min. This means that even if you were maxing your injectors out your lift pump would outflow the engine requirements.

I know it's crude but with a factor of 4 I think you'd be pretty safe.

I looked into the carter pumps a little further, looks like the carter black requires a regulator to run, the carter silver at lower pressure does not require a reg....so I might go carter silver.

Might also be time to talk to Lag - didn't he have a stainless steel surge tank he was making....or that might even have been Dave?

Wont be much more $$ than one of the Chinese options....I'll have to ask Lag what they are made of....looks like Aluminium?

i had a carter black on my stanza, didn't last that long because i had to drop the pressure down to 3psi for my twin 50's that i used to use,

i've got a bit of an overkill system on mine its a holley blue lift pump into a 1lt surge tank and fed to motor by a bosche 044 all with 3/8 lines. obviously i dont have any problems with fuel starvation but the bosche is almost noisier than the engine.

What you have stated here would be a good setup I basically have the same (carter black lift with bocshe 044 efi) it feeds my helthy ca18 with plenty to spare.
Id stear clear from holley pumps I have had a few issues and failures with them
I have run a carter black for many years behind my ca18 without issue. I like the look of the nice stainless fuel pump and filter cover in the photo.
Its also a really good idea to run a good filter before your pump to filter out any bad bits. (a quick way to kill a pump)

In the specs it states that a pressure regulator is required for the carter black....Andrew do you use a pressure regulator between the carter black and the surge tank?
