If your are stripping it down I suggest you do it (time pending)

rebuild the engine completely do
the crank, bearings, rods, rod bolts, pistons, metal head gasket, new timing belt, obviously the seals as well, water pump, head bolts, (i suggest APR for head and rod bolts) then just shave the head before refitting.

if money is an issue do the head at a later stage.

All that work alone will not increase your power, however it will allow you to run higher boost safely then thats where the power comes in

But I suggest do it but I also suggest do it properly once. otherwise it will cost you alot more in the long run.

^^ all of the above and balance

also it's a good idea to deck the block as well...

With my rebuild I had a set of Arias 20 thou over forged pistons fitted along with new bearings, gaskets and hoses. The crank, rods etc were checked and re-used. I used a new factory head gasket and new factory head bolts.

If I had my time over again I would fit a set of Spool forged rods as they are only $490 but at the time aftermarket rods were $800 and up.

I discussed all sorts of things like O ringing and shot peening with my engine builder but in each case he said such things were unnecessary.

Thats the key comment

you discussed it with your engine builder, he advised you on the best options for your application

That is what everyone should do.

i believe as stated earlier basically everything should be done at once.

what is actually done leave that to the profesisonal that is building your engine for your application.

no point me saying do this and that because thats what I want, e.g i want a drag car when others might want a track car

im rebuilding my ca right now mate... im getting the usual combo they do with theyre ca's so i know its going to be reliable.. mines gettin.

cp pistons
crower rods
clevite bearings
tomei headgasket
genuine gasket kit
arp bolts
bore and hone on block
shaved crank
and a reconditioned head.
maybe some other small things i cant think of right now..

they didnt worry about doing anything else to the block. is reliable enough they recon. and my motor was REALLY worn out.
hope that helps alittle.

all thats left now is cams, cam gears and bigger turbo. should make for a mean combo... just need to get myself a skyline diff now lol. still running stock locked ute diff
hopefully get my ute back next weekend.

Clevite bearings!
Wow, people are still using them... Been around for a looong time.

Campo - Did you get a quote for a rebuild or are you doing it yourself?

Trying to get an idea of the cost

The bottom ends in thes things are strong as, save your money just throw the forgies in with rings, bearings and gaskets. Get the block acid dipped new welsh plugs etc and the bores done to suit your new pistons. Also get the valve stem guides done in the head these things tend to blow a bit of oil past them. otherwise you can build a bullet proof set up and it is just over kill.
