At the risk of sounding like an old fart, crawl before you walk.Think about power to weight ratios first, stick in an a14 or 15 and get the stopping and going around corners part right first, the grunt part is only as good as how much you are prepared to pay.

Or you could put a turbo 4age in the 1000. That would go like the clappers, but you may cop a bit.

Cheers

You're next to no chance of getting a SR20DET engineered in a ute in NSW. Stick with the CA, start with it standard and mod it as you get used to the power.

standard 1200 ute is like 800kg (with fuel/oil etc.) then add another hundred in for the CA and your up to about 900kg

Let me save you some time.

In NSW the biggest legal naturally aspirated engine you can put in is 2L.

Biggest Turbo charged engine is 1.8L.

Datsun 1200 B120 ute: 1600 pounds
Datsun 1600 620 pickup: 2300 pounds

As you can see, the B120 has a clear advantage, and a better cc to weight ratio.
