Guys, I need advice on how to get a set of 17 inch wheels to fit my datsun 1000. I know that i will need to use spacers and longer wheel studs. However I need to know what size spacer and what offset should the rim be.

Offset means nothing without knowing the wheel width.

For a Datsun 1000, calculations say this should work (no spacers needed):
4x17 wheel
15mm offset
155/35/17 tires

are there road legal 4x17 tires?

I found that 205x13x60 tyres were the largest practical size that would fit & work under the rear of my B10 sedan. They were mounted on 5-1/2" wide rims, with a 4-1/2" backspace measurement.This, for me, was as good as it got. They would rub lightly if I had rear seat passengers over some bumps & if i came into some driveways, but without passengers it was OK.
These tyres are 576mm in diameter & this is clost to the practical limit for road use.

The online tyre size calculator that I used says that 205x35x17 tyres are 575mm in diameter which is only 1mm smaller. You might be able to get these under, but you might also have rubbing problems.

So there you go. If you can find some good loking 17" rims that are 5-1/2" wide, although, due to the shape of the wheel arch, perhaps 5" would be better, with a 4-1/2 backspace [4" backspace with 5" rims would be better] & if you can find some 205x35x17 or 195x35x17 tyres for the back, & if you roll the lip on the wheel arch as well as remove the flange where body & chassis join on the inner guard, you might just get away with it.

For fronts, I recomend sticking as closely as possible with the original tyre diameter of 552 mm to avoid steering problems & this could be achieved with 195x30x17 which come out at 549mm. A 5" rim will work better here too.
185x35x17 come out at 561mm & you might get away with these if you are carefull.
Rolled lips of the front wheel arch are highly recomended too. Very highly recomended.

Of course, with a sidewall height of just 58mm at the front & 72mm at the rear I would recomend staying off rough roads, & avoid potholes at all costs as the small air volume will assure a rough ride & damage to those rims is much more likely when there is little more than a rubber band around them for protection.

Still, the performance potential should be about four times what the chassis is capable of, so the safety factor is there for sure.

P.S. All of this assumes standard rear suspension height & only mild lowering of the front along with a 1200 or better engine to move it.
I think Ddgonzal has made a typo as 155x35x17 tyres are 540mm in diameter while the bigger 165x35x17 are closer to the original diameter at 547mm & these are quite legal on a whoping 5-1/2" rim.

Anyways it is all theoretical. I don't think there are any 155/35 or 165/30 17" tires. Anyways they would ride like solid rubber, you'd have to wear a kidney belt

These are OK width-wise (at 205mm) and only about 52mm taller (as tall as a 185/75R13): 205/45R17 at TireRack.com. If they fit under a 1000 fender/guard, they wouldn't be too tall a ratio for an A14-powered vehicle.

doing the math is one thing, you still have to find these rims. then once you found the backspacing and all that, see if they happen to go on a 4x114.3 bolt pattern.

good luck though. I'd like to find a set of 15x6 wheels with the right dimensions, but it's rare and styles make me think i don't need to spend the $$ so i'll keep my mixed set.

A guy emailed me with a pic of his 1000 wagon with 17s on it. I have the pic at my comp at home, ill post it when i get a chance.

I recon it looked horrible! I thought my 1000 was high off the ground with 205/60R13s on it! This car also still had 4wheel drums and all!


My 205/60R13s do rub on the back. Although i have 2" lowering blocks and sedan leaves(in a wag). Also 13x7 watanabes with 0 offset, still a little room on the inside for a offset change but i like dish! I have also rolled the rear guard to the best of my ability with a hammer and dolly. They only rub on the dodgy side(lots of bog already in the guard) so once i take to the inside with a griner... no more rubbing! Only rubs about 2mm before the bump stop, 'good' side is very close on the bump stop but clears(and looks sick when sittin on stops)

Hey all i just recently purchaced some 17x6.6 vault savanah from tempe tyres and the are easy as to install all i got to do is lip the front and rear guards and cut a corner out of the front guard.....

Is that on a 1000 or 1200 prospec?

Seriously, it would look like a bloody Landcruiser!!!

And the process would cost a fortune. The standard tyre for 17s is 235/45. On my old Falcon I had these on the front and 255/40s on the rear. The 255s cost twice the 235s, I assume going to 205 (which would be the narrowest tyre) would cost similar.
