Hi All,
I'm very slowly doing a CA18DET into 1200 ute (mainly slow coz of slack panel beters) but have most of my parts apart from tailshaft. I've heard a stanza 1 piece would be good but after options or help as Alice Springs is hard to get parts.
Thanks,
Philip

i dont understand why people are always asking this question....

you have a custom setup... you need a custom shaft....

if you can get a yoke to suit your gearbox and a flange to suit your diff

with the box and diff in the car measure from the face of the spline on the back of the box to the flange face on the diff

now take the flange, yoke and measurement to your friendly tailshaft maker

come back a few days later with $200-250 (it's really not that much is it??)

bingo you hae a custom shaft (new material used for shaft) with new unis perfectly suited to your setup and freshly balenced (read - super reliable - put in car and forget)

if you dont have the flange or yoke, just take the measurement, he will have or get the bits

try to find a shaft maker advised by someone else you know, some are better than others

Thanks rallycar for the info that did clear up a few things for me. I realise its a custom made tailshaft but people have suggested a stanza before as a base as it has right flange or yoke but am unsure. My major problem tho is that I live in Alice Springs and custom work is not always the easiest thing to get done and readily availiable parts are hard to find also. If anyone can help me out with parts or anything please let me know as with most things with this car it will most likely be sourced out of state.
Thanks Again,
Philip

The best place to start is a R31 manual tailshaft.

The gearbox spline will match your CA18 box & the diff flange will suit the R31 diff.

All you need to do then is measure per rallycar's advice below (make sure you leave 10mm float) & have a gearbox / diff mob fabricate a new tube & weld on to your uni's.
Cost me $270.00

The hard part is finding a manual R31 tailshaft.
I know for a fact that A1 Nissan wreckers in Brissy have one they could probably ship you.... But - They charge like a wounded bull!

I'm told you can also use a stanza, but you'll have to re-drill the diff flange to suit.

I used on my first conversion a 180B wagon tailsharft, on my ca stumpy with r31 diff. The rear uni joint can be removed and the r31 diff flange swaps straight over, Easy.
Please check the length as i was only told it was a 180b sharft, i didn't remove it from the car, so cant be 100% sure.

so your saying r31 rear uni and 180b wagon rear uni are the same? so that would make the r31 unis alot smaller than commodore and falcon unis used with the same diff?

for my r31 diff i used a stanza BW tailshaft (cut down) and redrilled 2 of the holes in the pinion flange on the diff

on the subject of just getting the 2 ends and getting some pipe put between, dont know if id be keen with a tailshaft that had a commodore sized uni at the far end and a much smaller datsun one at the other.....i'd always prefer the rear uni to die before the front one
as if your going an all out custom one might as well get commodore sized unis at both ends
or just go the cut down r31 tailshaft as i would think they would have the big unis
