if its a close ratio you are looking for there is i place i have heard of that cuts gears to suite

if its just a hardend gearbox you wand get it all shot peened and radius tested

There is also a place in wellington as well....it just knowing what ratio's your after and getting a pattern for them. Its sometimes harder getting that done than finding a close ratio gearbox already made.

Plus i know bugger all about gearboxes

No, I don't think Reg would let you know the finer points of the ratio's either, he'd be effectively doing himself out of business.

BigJase, heaps of companies can cut gears to the spec's you want but it's getting the "spec's" and then you have the issue the "one off" cuts are usually costly, you could do a big run of them and plan to sell them off, but thats risky and you'd have to finance it up front.

Quite frankly, I think 2000 to 2500 for a gear box is good buying, you'll save yourself a lot of time & hassle and you should get something that works.

I have two gears boxes -
1 is described as a "race" box and the gears are very close together and 1st is very tall i.e. its really hard to get my car off the line quickly even with my 4.875, but once you up and running its magic, the car is always in the peek of the power band.
the other box is described as a "rally" box, the gears are close but not as close as the race box.
A friend of mine used my race box once in his sunny rally car, and he didn't want to give it back he said it was so much better than his rally close ratio, but he did have a very peekie motor.

I have a lot to do with Dave Strong, the first thing he does when building a car is a good gearbox and diff, the biggest gains are often here and work out the cheapest in the long run, i.e. pay for good stuff and it last's for ever and works!

No, I don't know the ratios of either box, last time when I had them checked/re-built the guy was supposed to note them but forgot.

I know the rally box is a kit ex Reg Cook.
The race box is interesting because I've been told its a collection of gears from other nissan boxes i.e. the first in my box is actually second gear from a vanette or something like that, my race box goes back to shell sport days, where I believe Reg built 4 or 5 of these boxes and mine is the only one known to still be in use (A year or two back, Reg was very keen to get it back into his possion, but couldn't do a good enough deal on a replacement box for me).

well next time it gets rebuilt can you gett he guy to note them are they hardend and so on
