Gotta say i'm a bit confused here, and whats a nissan micra got to do with any thing.
First question :What flywheel do you have and what's been done to it.
Second:What clutch plate have you got.
Third:What pressure plate are you using.
Fourth:Which throw out bearing carrier are you using. Edit And where are you located

This isnt a 1200 replacement clutch... Its a Micra Turbo one that exedy suggested instead of the 1200 replacement...

1. An a12 flywheel lightened and flat face
2. An exedy part no.NSK6121 clutch plate same as any 1200 heavy duty unit
3. A custom made Nissan Mircra Turbo pressure plate from exedy that fits the 1200 clutch plate
4. 56a throwout and carrier I think... I'll double check that one tho

I'm in Mildura, VIC

a terrible friction/whirring/slipping sound can be heard from under the gearbox

hmmm sounds famliar i think i know the ezact nosie ur talking about, mine did it only with the clutch in.. was the spigot bush.. it was only worn minimal amount so much so that first time i split the engine/box to see wat it was i ruled it out, second time i pulled em apart i changed it and its now all good.. this all happened after i put a new clutch kit and machined flywheeel on it..just like u..

edit: also my flywheel was machined dead flat no step, it was just a standed clutch

Are you sure the flywheel is A12 as the A14 is different and requires a different throwout.
Personally,i have been unable to purchase a (heavy duty)clutch or pressure plate for any A series unit for several years now, however someone may enlighten me.A unit is available however through Repco and made by them but branded RPM,however all this begs the question in my mind on the compatability between Micra and A series bits.
I know for a fact that well over 100 flywheel hp can be put through a sprung or unsprung, puck or solid faced RPM clutch plate.
I reckon it's time to get the verniers out and take matters into your own hands and stop taking (mechanics)words as gospel,i feel someone's leading you up the garden path...but as i said,i'm open to correction
Good Luck

true, as mine only did it with the clutch pushed in so the disk was lose and free to rattle around, unless hes spitgot is super worn and the disk just has no support and its moving around so much its causing it to slip but as i have felt the wierd whinny rattle type noise i sort of know wat hes trying to describe. anyways just my 2cents adding to the possiblitys..

A simple slipping clutch doesn't make any noise in my experience. Doesn't sap power either in fact you'd expect it to rev out freely/quickly (not slowly) once it starts slipping.

Thoughts about the 'sound' - any chance the clutch plate is being installed round the wrong way and/or is fouling on the flywheel bolts? If so maybe it's working as a friction drive rubbing on the flywheel bolt heads? (Grips initially until rolling/power overcomes the resistance)

Were the clutch plates you've replaced burnt out? Were there hot spots on the flywheel or pressure plate?

Even with a clutch that slips under load, it should rev out in the lower gears if it isn't tramped on too early & as has been said, if it's slipping under load, the revs should 'flare up'
