have you got the right sump and pickup?
Sometimes the pickup is pressing against the bottom of sump and not allowing it to pull.

Hi sparky, Did you by any chance use an A12 camshaft? the gear for the oil pump is in a different location.

Do you have the right sender? A mate of mine had a variable sender on an idiot light. The higher the pressure got, the brighter the light glowed.

I havn't had much to do with the 'a' series engines at all... But other engines I have re-built in the past had to have the oil pump 'primed' first. (turned by hand and picking up oil).

i pulled the sump off and the oil pump drive is on the right spot on the cam , and i am using an mech. oil pressure gauge.
if i am to submerge the whole pick up in oil up to where it bolted on to block and fill the pump with oil can that work? but can i turn the engin with the sump off

The best way to prime an oil pump is to dissasemble the pump as to expose the gears and pack it as tight as you can with Vasoline (petroleum jelly) and prime the oil filter with oil as previously stated. It is important to use vas and not grease as the vas will melt and blend with the oil whereas grease will not. Grease will clag the oil gallaries and drain holes and will eventually find it's way to blocking the pickup. After priming the pump with vas and priming the filter with oil turn the engine over with the spark plugs out until you achive oil pressure. Remove your mechanicle sender and fit the idiot light sender to make sure. Aftermarket sender systems have been known to fail.
