I'm pretty sure just because tools are made by the same factory doesn't mean they're the same quality. Far from it.

It's a shame though.

But yeah I'm just looking for tools to do the odd job on my datsun, like when I was changing the starter motor i wished so much I had some ratchet spanners :D

buy a cheap set and replace any you break with more expensive tools...

seems the best theory to me

i've always bought cheaply and only can remember breaking one spanner and bending one other when i was jumping on it trying to undo something

i've bought quite a few ratchet spanner sets (aldi or bunings) for roughly 30 bux and never broken any of those... why pay more?

i dont see the value in more expensive tools i never manage to break the cheap stuff

when i say cheap im not talking 100 bux for a 150pce kit but ratchet sets (i got a HSV kit on sale for 100 at supercheap and cant fault it) spanner sets for $40-50 seem fine

IF you do chose to ignore that all at least remember get ratchet spanners!!! they save hours and hours!!!

I find that the cheap ones tend to bend the spanners open before they snap which leads to wear on the bolts, and cheap phillips head screw drivers tend to be too pointy and dont sit in the head properly so lead to round out heads...

I'm in the position of buying new stuff at the moment as the set that mum bought me for x-mass years ago are getting past there date because they are cheap, I was going to price snap on and then compare it to kingchrome, but will probably buy the snap on in sets as I need it...

when you work with hand tools all day, you will soon see the value in a 140 dollar ratcheting screwdriver, or a 170 dollar gas soldering iron that starts first time every time.
not to mention high quality tools are always easyier to use, more comfortable, are more innovative and normally have a replacement warranty if you happen to break one.

really its all horses for courses, if you dont use the tools much may as well buy cheapies, but if you use them all day good ones are definetly the go. personally i hate working with crapola spanners that look like little grains of metal glued together, or something that looks like its been pulled out of a Toyota spare tire/tool kit.

i have two sets of spanners, a cheap set for modified for speicalised use, for example undoing turbo from a standard CA manifold in a 1200 coupe, strut tower is in the way.

I also have a sidchrome set, A NEW SET! and the spanners are fine but i've stuffed two ratchets, they are crap! but i went and bought another ratchet from a local swap meet and it hasn't let me down, it is the older style sidchrome, they sure don't make them like they used to! my old man still has his set that he bought 20 years ago, and to this day he still doesn't let me use them!

Yeah I'm with you pepper, I hate cheap tools, I'm young if I buy good stuff now it will last me all my life, just so long as I look after it. Things like spanners are good no matter what they are until they break or bend, but a nice screw driver handle is so much nicer on the hands after a days work, rather than a cheap set... stuff like that just makes the difference and I think leads to better quality work because your hands arnt (as) stuffed when your in a rush and just want to get whatever it is back together and get some quality ralaxin time with the missus or whatever....

EDIT: I have also had a bit of tiny metal get stuck in my hand when using a cheap shifter, that pissed me off big time...

I've got new and old sidchrome stuff and I haven't found the new stuff to be all that bad. I have yet to break a socket and I have given some of them a hell of a work out over the years. Then again when you use the right tool for the job you rarely should have problems. Snap On and Blue-point are good too, and they basically have a no questions asked replacement warranty, probably because when you buy them you pay enough money for two sets.

RE: Repco tools..
pretty sure they're made by stanley works.. the same people that do sidchrome and stanley screwdrivers and stuff...
- crappier quality than they used to be, but the lifetime warranty gets them over the line.. almost all tools get replaced on the spot. almost.
