to fit a 5 speed into a 1200 you need to fabricate a new gearbox x-member because the mounts are 2-3 inches out. So if you're trying to use a 4 speed and put it back in but still using a custom 5 speed x-member, its going to have the same problem but in reverse. The 56a gearbox bolts up to the a14 engine fine, the 60 4 speed is just stronger (and may have slightly different ratio's?) you need to get a standard 4 speed x-member to bolt it up to the original mounts in the tunnel. Have a look in the wiki under gearboxes, it has a picture of a 4 speed x-member, will help you to idntify what one you're using. This may or may not help....

No it has the original gearbox mounts in the tunnel and i am trying to use the original cross member that is still bolted to the original 4 speed off an A12 from a 71 sedan.
Could the A14 be mounted to far forward ?

Yeah well there is no fan on the engine and the radiator has been recessed. Half a foot is probably exaggerated say about 10 CM's its cause of where the mount is on the gearbox on the 60 series they are near the back( tail shaft end) and on 56 they are more forward. problem solved Flat steel, Bolts. And a neighbor with a welder. Love thy neighbor. hes car buff to so All good.

With the 4 speed bolted to the engine, slot in the tailshaft. If it is the right length then your motor is in the right position. It is most likely ad Dodgy suggested, that your tunnell has been modified to suit the 5 banger. Sometimes it is easier to mask a modification to the tunnell than to mask a custom crossmember makind it a breeze for roadwortiness. Also if the motor was that far forward then even the 5 speed shifter would be way in front of where it should be. Do as Dodgy suggested and source to 60 series 4 speed. Eazy Peazy Lemon Squeezy!

Somebody modified your 1200 body mounts?

Maybe you need a un-do it adapter:

56 vs 60 transmission adapter

And hopefully a 60 series 4 speed. Also made up an adapter to mount the gear box up. Might post some pics Its a Doozy
