Hey guys,
Is it ok to run in excess of 40 deg of timing after 4000rpm?? under full load that is. I cant get it to ping at high revvs. should I keep increasing until it pings and adjust fuel to suit or what?
at idle it runs 27deg.
2000rpm it runs 29deg. (full load)
3000rpm it runs 35deg. (full load)
4000rpm it runs 40deg. (full load)
5,6,7 increase by 1deg each 1000rpm

Cheers in advance....advance lol. (for any advice)

sounds risky to keep increasing it. at full throttle you may not be able to hear pinging over the engine noise.

40 degrees sounds a bit rediculous. Going that far advanced surely isn't making you more power anyway.. What engine is it on?
One possible explanation is that what your computer thinks is 40 degrees isn't actually 40 degrees. Have you made sure your trigger offset is accurate? At 40 degrees i would have expected lots of pinging!

you need to check your tdc mark is actually at tdc with a positive stop. not a screwdriver in the plughole you could easy be 10 deg out then you would have 30 which is prob about right.
sounds like something is not setup right
DO NOT run 40 deg in anything you will kill the engine
if its not pinging it probably isnt set to 40

EDIS is 10 degrees. 40 max is not too much for a few engines, but the vast majority take 35 degrees MAX. 40 will damage them.

Here are the factory north american specs for stock A12 engine: 32 degrees MAX

Hey its an A14 engine. mild mystery cam, mild port inlet only. its at 40 deg at 4500rpm and above at full load.

EDIS is 10deg across all loads/revvs. but with megajolt attached it is programmable.

I have checked my wheel with a timing light. and its spot on with the display on the computer. when it says 27deg at idle it says 27 deg on the timing light. do I still need to check it with a stop??

I ran 32 degrees max on an L26 in my old 260z with twin sus, it went beautiful but wouldnt go any higher than that with todays quality 91 octane.

your checking this on the balancer with a timing light? pickup on the plug lead?(not pickup on a loop wire on edis)

is the mark on the balancer correct.some engines vary from year to year on the placement of the timing pointers and the nick in the balancer.
i dont know if a series changed during its life.
is the balancer 2 piece with a rubber elastomer?
they can move or be manufactured incorrectly

the way to find YOUR engines max timing is to add 1/2 a degree at a time until it makes no more power
27 at idle? it should run like a bag of s#it

actually it ran quite well at 27 at idle. and I have now backed it off to 14 at idle. runs very smooth now. lumpiness of cam is gone again....sigh.

The balancer is single piece solid steel. and yes I am using the plug lead as a pickup.

I think now its running right because if it was out by 10deg it wouldnt run well at 4deg.

I will use your way of tuning. my dads way is to advance till it pings then back off.

its now sitting at 35deg. max under load
