So finally got my fone camera workin and got all the photos off it.

The 120Y as she arrived at my house. I drove it there from the other side of canberra, the thing was slower than slow, had virtually no brakes and hadn't been driven for like 6 months. Was a little funny not being able to pull a stumbling a12 up from 50 odd ks!!

The engine bay after removing intake/exhaust manifolds

So I finally had my datto after missing out on a mates mad 180B and gettin this banger for free off another mate. After cleaning it up a bit, doin points etc she picked upa bit and I took her on a few dirt missions. And there was much rejoicing.

So by this time I had found Datsun 1200.com and began reading about carb upgrades. Classic noob style did no research. I bought some twin hitachis on a GX manifold.

Now is the time to tell you all how much of a noob I am. I ASSumed that being for the a12 they would bolt straight up. NOPE!! sorry you need to take the head off and tap new hole for the twin studs on the inlet manifold. So I thought hey maybe I'll just get an whole new engine.

Rather than buy a decent engine, I mean I want to make this as difficult as possible right!! I decide to ring the wreckers. A few phone calls later an I find a N10 front wheel drive A14 round the corner for $150. Sweet. Grab that!!

Around the same time I got some extractors: $150 So I had what I thought would be a kickin package. A14 Twin su's & extractors. So one snapped clutch cable and a weekend later The engine is in. Had to grind back the extractors to fit the su manifold but hey. Get it all on and Bam. I have no heat shield for the SUs, no fast idle linkages. Heat shield arrives, no way its fitting with the extractors.

By this time I'm sick of the su's and decide to buy a weber. Classic noob style do no research again. Its a little big but hey I now have a 2 inch straight thru exhaust so it will breathe fine. And I'm actually really happy with the 36/36 DCD after doing a fair bit o research, after the fact of course but thats how I seem to learn best.

Today I bought nolthane for the entire front end and did the radius and swaybar. Took em out cleaned and painted. Found one totally stuffed sway bar link pin. The lower control arm had a massive oval wear hole in one side as well. ere sum pics of that.

Basically all the red lettering needed deleting for pics to work..
You are using photobucket, usually i just hold the cursor over the pic in PB, copy the IMG code and paste into your post. You will have to change the to but seems to work. If there is an easier way i don't know it as yet...

Go the 120!

DYNO TODAY!!!!
I arrived after they had done like one or two runs, gettin 30 odd kw
After two hours I had 44.7kw

Big thanks to Autotech performance in Hume. Ed did a really thorough no bull s#$t job methodically testing everything to find what was right for the engine, not just trying to make big kw, I'll be going back.

She'll get a bit of a prezzie after makin 44.7kw atw, new clutch and new brake pads. Apart from that she's all patched, tuned to blat and ready for rego.

Its 120yeehah time, cowabunga dudes!!!

So I put in the electronic dizzy today. Used a Bosch GT40R coil and kept the resistor in place. After bolting it in there was not quite enough adjustability to get the right advance so I just extended the plate hole with a drill bit. It still needs like a degree more to get it back to 10 deg but its like almost there and I reckon the extra strength spark should make up the difference anyway. Apart from that new clutch is ordered and I'll get brake pads soon too. Hopefully rego next week!! I'll try the car tomorrow morn (its canberra and pretty cold already) to see what sort of difference the elec dizzy makes on cold startup.

Catch Ya
Jon

if your dizzy needs that much movement then you would have put it in one tooth out so pull it out and turn it enough to jump one tooth in the direction its out by

I did that but it was way too advanced. I may have missed a tooth and tried both sides of sweet but i dont think so. It starts first time idles strong and revs freely. I'll see tomorrow what happens in the cold as I haven't hooked up the choke cable yet
I was worried that it would be hard to get it in the right tooth but after a few trial attempts it was pretty bloody obvious what was going to work and what was hurting the engine.
Cheers

So this mornin I pumped the gas pedal twice kicked it, after a couple of turns it almost started (this is on a very frosty morning with no choke)

After two more pumps of the pedal and a two more turns of the key it was going. It didnt idle right away but this is with no choke on a frozen morning runnin headers (no manifold warming love here) I reckon w choke it would idle from cold.

So yeah good dizzy Mal, thanks. Really easy to install, needed minor mod to adjustment plate to allow proper adjustment range but was nothing major, like 1-2mm extension, and instant improvement in starting and idling.
