i saw the fast and the furios and the supra kept up with the charger at the end!!!

what they didnt show was the 1200 sedan with an air cleaner that was further up the road already!

(re; fast and furious) yeah for all that chassis twisting grunt it looked pretty silly pulling a wheel stand.

I'd rather the supra. Refinement and technology is always superior to sheer grunt and capacity - but not when that refinement costs heaps - what was the line in the movie ---- they threw 30,000US at it to get it that fast.....??? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Guess the thing for me though is I want a very low effort - barely stressed - 2-300HP all day with no strain for minimal money. The easist way for me to do that is take a lightweight v8 that hasn't had to have forced induction or $1000's worth of race preparation to get me some sensible pulling power. I know that I'm definitely going to get mountain pulling torque at low revs and that it will do it all day without blinking.

But back to the original post ---- I emailed the guy selling the motor and he wants more than $2KAu for the motor and box - that's out of my league. I just want to spend $500AU on a gearbox and bolt it to my existing motor. I've got a budget of less than $10k AU (including purchase of the spitfire) to prep and paint a sportscar that will do 5sec 0-100 times.

My current estimates put me at 7-8000Au for a convertible which will come close to 11sec 1/4miles with fantastic handling and stopping.

Even if it doesn't work out to be all that fast I'll have a sweet car for minimal money - damn it's giving me the ####s though trying to drop all the rust and #### from the body.

(i.e. is this race going to include braking or cornering or are we only testing one small factor of a car)??? i mean the v8 may have acceleration but has it got a single other feature?????????

What its all about is Kw/kg of engine mass (How much bang for the engine weight).
The GenIII has 300/208= 1.442 kw/kg.
Check the rest of the outputs in the following table.

as the pimple cream ad goes

"the evidence is clear and simple"

thats a damn handy table youve made
anyone care to add some v8 data to the conversation? or even rotary data?

i hear the 300kW holdens are hard to get decent amounts more power out of as they are getting closer to their limits anyway, is this true?

the other engine i like is a 4agze, does anyone know what one of them weighs?

i dont agree, its a good measure of "efficiency", but as ive been trying to say, high kg's is detrimental to other performance measures

why do we like 1200's?, LOW WEIGHT AND GOOD BALANCE, dont spoil it

What I was trying to show is that the Gen III eights dont really weigh much more than an FJ20DET and give really good power for the engine weight. I agree it would be interesting in a 1200 with that much mass up front. A guy at "exhaust fix" in croydon is fitting one to a gemini as a drag car. I think that will be a weapon.

Be nice to have a datto to knock him off 1200RC! When you get the A15TT going it might nearly do it? I dont see any reason why you couldnt get 300 hp from a 1500.
If Renault could get 350 from their pushrod R5 1527cc engine, 300 should be a snack for a robust A series!! . Now that would make a power to weight of 2.3 kw/kg!!!!!!!!! woo hoo!!!!!
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
VROOOOOOOOOOM
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Its good to get an idea of the mass efficiency of some different types of engines cause this is what makes a good performer!

I have a performance predictor spreadsheet I made up that you can input gear ratios, diff ratio, vehicle mass (engine speeed and torque). It makes for interesting acceleration comparisons in each gear.

a well sorted single turbo EFI setup should be able to get there, but anytime you have less than 3cyl feeding a turbo, you're fighting an uphill battle with exhaust pulsing problems.

I don't think anyone's really advocating Rover V8 into 1200 swaps in this thread.
But for people thinking about dropping a V8 into a light car, or anyone who owns a 6cyl, the Rover V8 is a very good choice, and as demonstrated here - highly underrated. I'm just pointing out that they are not just for moorings or boat anchors as was suggested.

pet hate:

people braging bout alloy this and that without quoting actuall weights

cause in my experience the alloy stuff is never really THAT much lighter that its the fantastic thing people make it out to be
The 4.4 alloy V8 in my 240K is more than 50kg lighter (this is from some pretty dusty old memory banks - so go easy on me) than the Nissan 6 it replaced, and all its weight is further rearward in the chassis. Plus its got atleast 50% more power than the old lump. I guess fantastic is all relative...

I too saw the Fast & Furious movie & the engine in the Dodge was not the original type 426 [with front distributor] but an early hemi. Probably a '57 or '58 392cube model with it's rear distributor.

Some of those 10 second drag races took a lot longer than 10 seconds on screen, so we must accept that certain things are done for dramatic effect. In other words, don't believe everything you see on the screen, like running into the front wheel of a semi & fliping over instead of knocking the front axle out of the truck.
If you really think that the Supra could stay with that fire breatiing hemi without it being in the script, then you must accept that i do not agree.

I near crapped laughing when i saw the Supra so much as keeping the Dodge in sight, but this is a Datsun forum, so i will leave it with a repeat of what i wrote before

I get more fun per cylinder from my Datsun than anything i can afford.
