Well, I'll just throw this out there... I'm selling my Rebello L23B(L20B stroked to 2.3). It was in my '69 510, it dynoed out at 220H.P. at the wheels,(Yes at the wheels) and is very streetable as I drove it for 4 years on the street. Power from way down low. Plus I agree that S.U.'s or Hitachies are way too small for an L20B.I don't think I would put it in a 1200 though, too heavy. I'm sure it would cook in a straight line but I think the balance of the car would be way off after adding over 100lbs. to the nose. Plus you're going to have to swap out the rear end for something a lot beefier like an H190 or something like that...

The main rason the L-series has come up trumps is that 5 speeds are cheap, and hard to break. had a stumpy box in my old CA'd 1200 with over 200rwkw & never had a drama. - Diffs on the other hand, well thats another story.

So far the plan is stock series II bluey l20b, mech fuel pump, single 45mm webber, redline manifold, stock l20b no crap headers & a stumpy 5 speed when I round one up & a lighted "to datsport spec" flywheel. - Dont really care what it makes, as long as it's reliable. - I've got a bike to go fast on.

lowtech, sounds like that engine would go quite nicely in a 1200, would also go round corners fine as most of the weight you are adding would be behind the front wheels anyway and the extra weight of the diff you would need should balance it nicely

my 1200 went round corners fine with an L20b in it and pretty average suspention

Well, got the gearbox, and a stanza cross member and mounts to play with. Only thing I can't find is a speedo cable to suit!
