Hi all,

Just wondering if the JATCO auto's have a provision for an oil cooler? Couldn't find anything in the manuals, wondering if this could be turned into one?

Cheers,
Sam

I don't think so. Early JATCOs do not use an external cooler, not even a the usual tubes to the radiator.

However it looks like it has 'provision' for one.

The A series trans is the Jatco 3N71A or 3N71B & this basic trans was used behind the more powerful L series engines, both 4 & 6 cylinder models so it was really a bit of overkill for the little 1200 & A12 engines.
Have a look under an auto equiped L series model to see if this pipe is what we think it is. [Some models used the BW35 trans]

It's my guess that the engineers determined that the A series didn't have enough power to make too much heat in these transmissions.

Any decent radiator shop should be able to install a trans cooler in the lower tank of a radiator if this is what is desired.

Yeah I'm running an auto rad in my Morris and it has the tubes for the auto so I thought I may as well hook them up if I can... might have to do some more digging I think...

If you look at the torque converter used on the A series engines you will notice that there is a somewhat crude centrifugal cooling fan built into the transmission side of the converter. The cooling requirements are pretty low for a car as light as the B series.
