..that said, I recently received one of Mal's (Weekend1000) fantastic B310 aftermarket elec dizzys and need to check what coil is required?
Is it the GT40 or the GT40R?
Cheers,
Sam
If the distributor is of the High Energy type, then you will need a suitable High Energy coil.
If you have a distributor that has been fitted with an electronic conversion kit, such as the Pertronix, then a GT40 coil will be good.
These conversions are essentially a 'points replacement' system that run on full system voltage, so using the resistor will degrade ignition performance.
I didn't remove the resistor when I fitted my Pertronix, I just bypassed the resistance element with a short fly lead between the end terminals. Laziness breeds simple solutions.
I also cary a new point set & condencer so that I can revert back & get going again in the event of module failure.
I also run Platinum plugs. These allow the spark to jump the standard gap at a lower voltage, so a slightly wider gap can be used without overtaxing the coil.
The net result is easier starting & the engine fires on every cylinder, every time.
Nothing like a nice big fat spark to light the fire.
