A friend is installing a CA16DE into yet another of his 1200 coupes.
I noticed that the oil filter is mounted to an alloy housing that is bolted to the block & this seems to encroach into the area where the engine mount tower from the crossmember goes.

He has overcome this problem by reducing the height of the tower by about half it's height & fabricating a custom bracket from the engine, BUT....

I would like to know if there is another oil filter mount from another engine in this family that moves the filter further foward.
I have had a look at a CA20 in a Goulburn wreckers this afternoon & the filter fits straight to the block, so i guess that this block is a diferent casting in this area.

Anybody know of a diferent part that will help out?
Chris

i know some of the L series engnies have a part on it that move the filter out from the block and at an angle, and some L series the oil filter is straight onto the block,
Have you tried taking the attachment off to look whats under it? you might find the filter can be put straight on there instead
I might be able to find out more once i get home, i have all the parts fiche for all models if that might help

You could always just leave the filter off!
I am sure this would solve the problem

Yeah, thanks a lot for that.

Ant-Dat
Removing the housing is on the list, but it's not a high priority for him as he has come up with his own solution, but it IS important for me, as the instalation of this engine type has become "option B" for my 1000 coupe.

I want to have the whole thing look as "factory" as possible, & if i can avoid cutting the engine mount towers, then thats the way i want to go.

A CA16DE in my coupe will not impress the power freaks, but this engine is readily available, is very affordable when compared to it's more powerfull brethren, & at about double the power output of the original engine, it will drive very nicely. If i can make the overdrive trans fit without major surgery, then i may well solve that annoying "undergeared" problem that i have been suffering from for many years.

At this time, i am just doing my homework, so if you can let me know what your parts book says, i would be most gratefull.

Chris.

I have not been involved with these "late model" Datsuns before, so i am not sure what models used the CA16DE, but they came in the sporty EXA [its a word, not E-X-A.] & i think that these were around in the late 80's. They came with the CA18DE & the CA18DET also. They are a front drive thing [booo hisss] but the engine looks to be readily useable in rear drive applications.

Hopefully, someone will bring us both up to speed on model applications.

Thanks again
Chris [too many bloody Chris' in this world]

Never seen a CA16DE oil filter housing. Does it just stick straight out? Or does it twist or bend when it encroaches?

Mat [?]

The oil filter is mounted verticaly, threaded end up, about 3 inches away from the cylinder block, at the end of this cast alloy "block" This block is bolted to the engine by four[?] bolts & this suggests that diferent applications of this engine may have used diferent parts to mount the filter in diferent positions to allow clearance or servicing problems to be overcome.

Hang on just a sec ... okay, I'm ready (It's kinda tricky to see what you're typing from this position)

Now (please try not to stare at my cam shot, it makes me nervous) I'm guessing your "block" bends up at a 90 degree angle?

I'm not sure about RWD CA oil filter adapters, but the U.S. spec Pulsar FWD CA uses a horizontal, "straight" cast alloy "block."
