I have been rattling an idea around in my head for the last few weeks about a datsun 1200 with the gtr skyline running gear.
I started building a ca18det 1200 ute a few years ago, but lost intrest and just put it in the back yard and forgot about it. but I have been thinking of getting it out and finishing it off.

My thoughts are getting the ca bellhousing and fitting it to the front of the r32 gearbox, I did something similar with the old 240k gearbox and found out that the bellhousings seem to be the same except for the cluster bearing size, which between 240k 5 speed and ca18 box its just a bearing change, easy stuff. Hopefully I can fit the r32 box behind the ca18 bellhousing with little fuss??

Making the gearbox fit in the tunnel would take a bit of cutting and fabrication, still no biggie..

My thoughts for the front end would pose a bit of a challenge, was thinking of usuing front wheel drive struts out of something that ran 4x114.3 wheels u12 pintara maby, or might be better to use a v6 fwd strut maby nissan maxima?

Then the engine crossmember, thinking of usuing the r32 k frame, that way I could run the r32 powersteering rack and there would be room for the front diff.

Here is a pic of a celica with the r32 k frame fitted in

Since I love awesome fabrication and engineering I say just do it, work it out along the way! :D
On a slightly more serious not. The r32 K frame will be about 150-200mm to wide from memory. I looked at fitting a s13 k frame to my car at the start of the project.
Not saying it won;t work just that it will require quite a lot of fab
Also the transfer case will take up a lot of room on the drivers side probably about where your rear seat mount will be.
The good news is it shouldn't be too hard to adapt ca bell housing to r32 box. It won't be as simple as the 240k box you did because the rb25/26 boxs are physically bigger than the ca boxes but its definitely been done before (ca to rb25 box, not rb26 box that I know off but should be same deal)

Good luck, I want to see some awesome fab pictures :D

not sure if its the picture angle or its just a mock up but the drivers side axle on the transfer case looks to be pointing right at the chassis rail/crossmember?

great idea but if you weren't able to finish a ca18det rwd conversion what makes you think this is a good plan?

you have no idea how much #OOPS#ing around there will be involved in this

I have no idea either. But I have seen plenty of swaps as complicated as the Corolla one.

Bit of a bold ststement bud, seeming you have never met me..

I was one of the first on the 1200 site to complete a ca18det conversion, it was in a coupe and that was back in 2002 user name back then was "go_the_datto" but I cant log back in to that account for sme reason, a few other projects I have compleated are a

-turbo L20b 1600 intercooled with a blow through lpg set up
-289 windsor and C10 auto into 1200 sedan
-draw through lpg turbo L300 mitsubshi van
-rb20det bluebird
-twin vortech supercharged vn v8
-turbo vn v6 manual

all these builds I did the fabrication work myself, I then bought a few off the shelf kits, one was a ls1 turbo set up, I fitted it all up and did the fabrication on the 3.5" dump pipe to twin 3" df exhaust,

So even though this would be a big project from an engineering point of view Im up for a callenge

There's a reason why they say "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"

Do it if you think you are capable, it will certainly be unique once you're done.

I'd love to see it also. Good luck if you go through with it!
Any chance this would be legal anywhere in Oz... SA maybe?
