I might have to challenge you for the longest build record but welcome and looking forward to seeing your progress.

I also have had a little one arrive in the past year or so and it certainly limits Datto "play" time but the joy they bring more than makes up for it!

good luck, looks ok except for the bog hahaha. Ask any of us melbourne guys if you need parts or finding them, we might know some one else with what your looking for.

glad youve started a build thread, well done!
its a great way to keep track of your progress, and good to look back on if you forget something..

as you know from our convo i too have had two little ones in the 4 years ive had my ute :) .. i wish you luck on the family and in finding time for your other project (the datsun)

the car LOOKS good, but always deceiving under the paint, mine had 1 inch thick sections in some parts, aso chicken wire, foil etc in rust holes under the bog.. good news is new panels are available for us..

good luck

I picked up most of my bits last night (Engine, trans, wiring, diff, 2 tailshafts (R31 for diff and S14 for transmission end), instrument cluster, radiator (rooted!) and handbrake bits)
Here's a couple of piccies, sorry about poor quality in the dark garage. Mind you this is where the heart/lung bypass will occur! I'll need a miners helmet!

I'll hopefully start pulling out the original engine this weekend if I get time. I've rooted my back lifting the engine into the ute so let's see how we go!

Thanks for the offer I'll hit you up if I get stuck.

I would be interested to know what it costs you to get the diff done. I'm hearing stories of around $1000 all up to cut down, rebuild and match to the Datsun rear end. I'll do as much of it as I can myself to save a bit.

Hey mate just a tip before you get started if you plan to register it consult your plans with an engineer. Im pretty sure sr20det in a no go in victoria in a 1200 ute would hate to see you put all that time and effort in the not be able to drive it just my 2 cents anyway goodluck

I did have my concerns initially but I've done a bit of research and I'm pretty confident it should be ok.
The biggest thing is making sure everything that is done is perfect. No daggy looking brakets, cocky $hit welds or patches of rust in the chassis or engine bay and it should get through.
Obviously the upgrade factor is very important too- bigger brakes (discs all round) bigger wheels and other associated handling and stopping hardware.
Thanks for the concern though, it would be shattering to get to the end of it having spent $15000 only to find I can only drive it on Sundays!

Hi mate
You probably know tihs already but most engineers want to see the car progressively throughout the build rather than just have someone front up with a finished product for them to rubber stamp.
As has been suggested above it is best to consult an engineer during the iitial planning stage and work with them throughout the build.

I didn't know that to be honest (periodic inspections). I have spoken with an engineer and he is going to come up with a list of dos and don'ts for the build to make sure it follows his requirements. I'll be sure to find out the points at which he wants to see the ute to get a nice quick stamp (in 3 years when I finally get it all done!). I'd better choose a young engineer just in case he dies between now and when I'm ready to hit the road!
