or stick your finger in the #1 plug hole turn engine till it choofs your finger off then you have the correct TDC (end of induction,beginning of power stroke) then turn by hand till TDC mark, (if its correct, outer ring of balancer can move on some engines, luckily not a series)

thanks guys!
just out of curiosity i put the distributor in with the engine at 7 deg btdc on compression stroke what difference is it if i just put it in at 0 degrees at compression stroke?

There won't be any difference. The engine will run without backfiring at 0 degrees BTDC. It just makes more power at 5-8 degrees.
And you don't have to pull the distributor out to set it to 7 degrees, just rotate it a bit.
Remember that dwell and timing are the foundation of engine tuning.
