Gearbox problem.

Hi posting for a friend he has a manual gearbox in his 1200 sedan an he has some problems with it,so when he is driving in 4th gear an he wants to gear down to 3rd its not able to do that.would any one be able to give him some feedback?

1. While driving along in 4th gear, slow down to below 30 mph

2. Remove foot pressure from accelerator pedal

3. Press clutch pedal fully to floor

4. Move shifter from 4th to 3rd

5. Let up clutch pedal and remove foot from it

6. Continue driving by applying pressure to accelerator pedal

thanks but he says that he has to come to a complete stop to get it out of 4th maybe sominting is wrong with the gearbox?

Ah, yes if it won't come out of 4th except at a complete stop, something is broken. Best to swap a good used 4-speed in its place.

Change your gear oil.. if still get the same problem..

Sounds like too much endfloat on 4th gear. I had a 5 speed jam in 4th gear. Stripped the box, and added a small shim to pack out the endfloat. Problem solved.
If you remove the front half of the gearbox casing, you should be able to measure the endfloat with feeler gauges.
