Hi I'm sure the column is locked in/peened over onto the bush outer shell. First you will have to unlock it with a small punch or screw driver, then you can tap it anti clockwise with a punch in the grove or turn it with a pair of multi grips. The bush that I changed years ago was one piece. Metal threaded sleeve on the outside with rubber on the inside. Hope all this makes sense. Also I went to Nissan at blacktown last year to order this bush, when it came it it was wrong ( not for collapseable column ) so be aware. Maddat has the right one

Anyone have any other tips for removing the sleeve of a worn out mangled steering bushing?

Having a hell of a time getting mine out. The last one I changed 3 or 4 years ago was alot easier to remove.

Use a spanner wrench.

IF a previous installer has crimped it locked, you'll need to fix that first (uncrimp it, notice is has been hammered)

Unfortunately if the previous mechanic screwed it in too far (as on my ute) the it's much more difficult. In this case you can tap it with a punch or scredriver anti-clockwise -- but it will take a very, very long time, so be patient.

Okay started chipping away at the metal between the sleeve and the shaft. Did this all along the circumference. Noticed some maroon colored residue on the threads. Hammer and screwdriver would not budge it. 2 hours of hammering no luck. Resorted to using a propane torch. Torching and hammering at the same time loosened the sucker. What a headache. Job now done. Pics to follow on build page

Also there was no thrust washer and i was not able to screw it in far enough (the new bushing) to accept a washer anyways. Just the original split ring
