2 weeks and no leaks - it's parked in the garage so its easy to see anything amiss on the concrete floor

Still considering swapping out the auto for another auto. The power does not seem to be getting out of the gearbox down to the wheels - it can be a bit of a slug at times and then other times it will delay shifting and kick you back in the seat. From research on the internet (which is mostly pooled ignorance) it could be something called 'shift flare' .... anyone heard of that?

I think it means the gearbox flares between changes and could be slipping all the time, I don't know if the ca boxes are band driven or not but my old cortina used to flare the gears made big differences with a good box behind it

There's always a reason you get something cheap...

1. You have to go a long way to get it
2. Someone is desperate to sell it
3. It's broken and you don't know it

Scored a triple whammy on the Gearbox I got off eBay cheap, the guy needed it gone and ... oh not in such 'good working order'.

The selector wasn't clicking into gears ... oh no!

I took the 'new' box down to Tommo's workshop so I could get some help and advice as I didn't want to (couldn't) put it in all by myself (too heavy, I don't have a gearbox jack and wanted to make sure I didn't stuff it up)..... Pulled off the pan and discovered that the shift selector arm was Below the retainer spring and the selector rod was back inside (no-where to be seen). After an hour of discussion and fixing it was back on the road to installing. I certainly did not need this interruption and I am now a little weary of why it did it and will it do it again. I can see some negative feedback going on eBay for this transaction.

It's in (as of 11pm last night). It feels better (even though I need to check the fluid levels again). I did manage to knock off the fuel return line with the gearbox dipstick tube resulting in fuel going everywhere once we started it (also bent the tube into an almost unreachable position - going to have to send my hands to yoga lessons). But job done

oh... and replaced the starter motor with one from an EXA. The 'standard CA18 one I had only had a single earth INSIDE the housing and was a single armature type. The EXA one has gear reduction. another difference it that the EXA one only has one threaded mount and a straight through hole at the bottom so you need a long bolt and a nut rather than a bolt only

replaced the 1/4 window rubbers today.... bought them off Scott at MADDAT - cheaper than eBay and genuine

just a tip if you're replacing these or the bailey channel rubbers in the doors.

Buy and use silicon spray! lubricates the job and helps to move things slightly when you're just a fraction out - which is common with this job

Today is put it apart day

Dash is coming back out, have to find one of those annoying rattles (probably create 2 more in the process)
Also have to find the continuity break in the detonation sensor wire - probably what's causing my error code 34 and low power under 3000 rpm
Next need to plug up a hole somewhere - I think it's in the heater area ... it gets cold air though there and in Melbourne in winter I get nice hot air through the heater and a cold draft coming just near my left knee just under the dash
Finally have to neaten up some wiring and reset the fuel gauge (fiddled with it before installing and it only reads 3/4 when the tank is full

Oh well hopefully get it all back together

Yeah you really need to fix that detonation issue so you can get it driving the way it should.

As for the cold air I hope it's not a big rust hole...surely not in a Datsun!

What's happening to poor old Kermit when all this attention is being lavished on the ute...just pushed back into a dark corner in the shed?
