Love that last pic of car on the grass car looks tough man and has a great stance, well done. What i would give for a straight 120y 2 dr sedan.

Hi I was just wondering whether this conversion has been engineered?

I'm planning on taking my 120y sedan off the road in a few months ready for an L16 conversion. I'm not really thinking along the lines of track, more just a good starter project which will be street legal.

I've had a bit of a read through and L-Series engine conversion could be the way to go and I want to start stockpiling what I need if I decide to go that way.

It will be as soon as I get it running without belching out smoke :P

I've had L series engineered in 1200s and 120Ys before. No problem. Makes a good street car too - heaps of torque.

L series in a 1200/120y brings it alive without overpowering the chasis imho.

reconditioned turbo is back, but I've decided to freshen up the engine while its apart. Welsch plugs were just starting to leak and there was a rattle in the timing chain area. I pulled it out and stripped the engine on the weekend - turns out the tensioner and one of the guides were worn through to metal. Oil rings are all gummed up and the bearings have seen better days, so it's just as well I pulled the engine now I think...

It will just be a standard rebuild. L20 CR worked out to be about 8.5:1 Perfect for a turbo :) I'll get the flywheel lightened a bit and get a Sports 2000 clutch to give it a bit more clamping pressure while still being smooth & gentle on the 63A box.

Might paint the engine bay while its out too.

Well I finally got around to buying the engine rebuild parts, two and a half months later... Rings, bearings, timing set, full gasket kit, spiggot bearing. Oh, I picked up a reconditioned head for it about a month ago as well. The head I had on this motor has shot guides and valves. I don't want to risk the good worked head on this motor until it's sorted and proves reliable. A stock one will do fine for now. I've decided to use the standard clutch in the hope it will be gentler on my poor unsuspecting 63a gearbox. Well, that and the fact it looks brand new and I'm a cheap-arse!

I'm hillclimbing the Soarer again this weekend, trying for the class record. Last time I was 4 tenths off it... So the rebuild will happen next week after work and slot back in the car next weekend. I'm excited! Hopefully the Soarer can crack the record this weekend and then I'll happily retire it from motorsport for a while and focus on the Datto. If not, I'll have to buy a pair of wider tyres for the back and have another crack at the record.

My goals were for the 120Y to be as fast as the Soarer which was fairly realistic at the time, but it's running pretty quick since I put the 3" exhaust on it... It's done 61.35 at Lakeside and 48.30 at Mt Cotton, which is just a fraction quicker than the best 48.37 my old L18 1200 ran back in 2004 with the good SWR 1995cc L18 making 146rwbhp and a 240Z box that had nice ratios for the hillclimb, with a 4.3 diff and full cage... It's not going to be easy to get to those times!
Even with a turbo on it, I'm not expecting quite that much power, the gearbox is just a normal ratio thing, stock 3.9 diff, half cage and second hand rubber at this stage. I think it might take a while and several upgrades to get there, but that's the fun part for me. It's taken a couple of years to get the Soarer down to these times with little upgrades along the way. I really enjoy the process of tuning cars and making them quicker.

The cars I want to beat:
My old L18 coupe at Mt Cotton 48.37

And my 2.5 twin turbo Soarer 48.30 (hopefully 47.8something after this weekend)

The Soarer broke the class record with a 47.81 :D

So it's 120Y time now. It's just a quick rebuild to freshen up the engine. Over the last couple of nights after work, I've honed the bores and cleaned the block, pistons etc ready for assembly which will start tonight. She should finally be running again by Saturday :) It's not much, but it is a progress pic:
