If you are not too hung up on running genuine Nissan Mk2 Escort Sport work with those drums.
I weighed all options up very carefully here and in the end felt that the most cost effective way to put a strong, reasonably priced rear end in with an excellent and ready choice of ratios from 3.55 to 5.3 along with reasonably priced lsd units was to go the Mk 1 Cortina axle housing way and use the Escort brakes with the 260Z finned aluminium drums- very period and a very cool look especially having them 'vibro'polished which is essentially a light sand blast then a semi polish.
Cheers
Dave

Thanks Dave but I have the diff with the ratio I need and most of the extra bits.
That info should go in the wiki though, could help many people.
Cheers.

Hi D,
'Ford Escort stuff is very overpriced
heavier and no were as easy to source'

Maybe thats the case in Aust but over here in NZ its the complete opposite.
Trying to track down a good H165 is quite difficult and very man and there dog is after one but the real problems start when trying to get an lsd unit at realistic money for it. The best option that I could find was through Stuart Wilkins in Sydney using a KAZ unit but by the time I sourced a diff head in Aust, got it to them, got them to fit the lsd unit that they recommended they did as it was not a straight bolt in and bought it back over here the bill was heading past NZD $4500.
A brand new plate type lsd for the Ford from Palmside over here was $1100.
4.1/1 Ford diff head ex Trade Me $75.
Also available are brand new Quaiffe axles- over here if you broke an H165 axle you would have a real problem on your hands sourcing a replacement.
Also I would question what you are saying re the Escort parts being much heavier- without getting the scales out I would not have thought that there was much in it between an H165 ( or certainly an H190 ) and the little Ford diff.
The Ford unit is very tough which is why it has been very successfully used over the years over here in many of the top running 1200's that have been campaigned in both circuit and rally.
Thanks for all the info though.
Cheers
Dave

Ae86 centres swap in as do the axles which are also available aftermarket from TRD and other yota suppliers

Ford Esky stuff here is very rare, overpriced and most post 75 eskys have long ago rusted or been crushed for their lack of ownership love and lack of motivation to keep them on the road.

The H165 and H190 have alloy carriers available and being banjo type carriers even the cas iron carriers can be lightened for that extra anal racers edge.

Along with alloy drums from factory - Nissan has it all in the past till post 1993 when Toyota became better at everything in terms of reliability, durability and performance which Nissan/Datsuns used to be known for. Even here in Japan Nissan now has a bad name for quality and durability much like a Ford or Holden back in Oz so they are crushed asap.

every country is different
