Hey Datsun Team,

I got this carburetor and had some questions about it.

1. Which carburetor is this? A Twin SU? Which make? I think it came off a Datsun 510. Engraved on the metal are the words JAPAN 220 and a black sticker labelled TYPE 13A

2. Will this fit on my stock A12 manifold? If not, which modifications should I make?

3. What can I expect in terms of performance if I manage to install it?

Please advise. Thanks.

Regards,

It is a factory Datsun Hitachi carburetor setup, from a Datsun 510 SSS. They are SU-style carburetors.

The manifold is for L16 engine, and won't fit A-series engines.

For more information, see HTC

Exactly right. The switch to flat-tops took place mid-1973.

180B is Datsun model no. 610. It used the 220 (510) manifold until April 1973 then switched to the K14 manifold.

The 510 twin carbs can be used on A12/A14 if you get a manifold. The jetting is a different spring (light spring for A-series, heavy for L-series) and a different needle. Then there is the throttle linkage: A-series used cable, L-series used rod linkage.

Manifolds A-series
* Lynx D1200SU for round-port heads
* Factory A12 manifolds for extra large port GX or A12T heads
* Factory A14T manifold for A14/A15 oval port head

Thanks Guys. How about getting a sort of manifold adapter to stick onto the A12 manifold? Would that work? Are there any other mods to consider? Performance-wise what would the impact be as compared to my stock single carb?

Why not just fit a Datsun 1200 GX manifold? Guys have used them on A12s, they bolt on if you drill the outer holes. The large ports in the manifold can be filled in down to round size using engine fill or JB-weld.

Yes, any carburetor larger than stock will wake up the A12 at rpms over 5000. If you never rev over 5000 rpm, it won't make much difference.

Cant find a GX manifold around here. Not too many of the GX versions were imported to Kenya. Maybe I need to search harder. Yes I never rev above 5000rpm. Will there be no change in acceleration? I hear the Hitachi twins make a great sound even at lower rpms. Was hoping there is some sort of manifold adapter that can be installed on the stock A12. Thanks again DD

I've never seen nor heard of an adapter.

The GX was never sold here either, so we import them or by used from racers. They were common in South Africa.
