LSD's can be shimmed quite tightly. The R31 Skyline LSD I have under my 1200 will behave not unlike a locker on tight u-turns.

I have a locker. I can't afford the luxury of purchasing an lsd.

I have always run a welded diff and i always get the same guy to weld it (havent had 1 break yet Touch wood) Its true cops dont like it i got booked for a burnout while doing a u turn in my local shops.
I didnt go through tires unless i drove like a dickhead and i didnt indanger myself or anyone else unless i drove like a dickhead It comes down to how smart you are.

The locked diff acually mad my ute much safer because it didnt break into massive wheelspin goin back to third at 120kph like it did with the single spinner.

PS make sure your axles are up to it, i snap mine as if they were made of glass.
cheers luke

I run a CIG locker in my rally 1200 coupe, and while a LSD would be better in a rally car I much prefer a locker over an open diff. My rally car doesn't get driven on the road daily but i haven't found the locker dangerous. I think the dirvers of these cars CAN be dangerous. Not all but some! I have driven my rally car in the rain many times without any problems, understeer, oversteer, wheelspin ect. obviously trying to accelerate quickly from a dead stop will induce some wheel spin but this will happen with any diff. Drivers need to start driving to the conditions taking into account, road conditions as well as their own car plus other idiots on the road.

If you are going to run a locked diff, it pays to paint thin straight lines down your axles. this way you can pull out an axle and inspect it for twist so you can replace it before it snaps.
It is also better to make a "foundry locker" instead of welding up the gears. Welding up side gears can fukc the metal and cause the gears to crumble ( a bit like when a std 1200 diff blows).

I run a locker in my 1200 sedan, absolutely love it, at an open interesction, rev high then clutch it swings round like a mad man, absolutely love that locker. they can be dangerous if you dont treat them with respect, respect it and you will be fine, just like all things, mine passes a warrant even when the warrant turns into the garage with "click click click click" theyre damn fun and at least your guaranteed to be able to pull off an'O' or drift from that intersection, ive scared myself a few times, such as one time in the morning, dewy road, tight corner, went round immidiately spun 2 o's before i even knew what was happening, spun round in the direction to go and went on my merry was as if nothing had happened, haha but you have to love "click click click" at least theyre different eh.

This is an interesting thread. I don't think I know one person who has a spooled or welded diff in their street car. I assumed that understeer would be an understatement.
I personally don't really have a use for a spool. I grew out of burnouts after my first $400 transmission rebuild.
Who am i kidding, i cant do a burnout with one wheel, let alone two

From your description, you are the only one who is actually running a locker. A Detroit Locker. All the others seem to be locked diffs.

The "click click click" is a characteristic of the Locker & it takes a particular style of driving to use one, but they do have their advantages, & legality is one of them. So is the ability to go round a corner without scrubbing the crap out of the tyres. The positive locking guarantees locked drive when you need it. That sure beats the crap out of welded diffs on the street.
