can you tell us more about this push-to-start setup?

Ahh yes, my jerryrigged ignition barrel setup

White (batt 12v) to 30 on the relay, pin 1 on the toggle switch and pin 1 on the press switch
Black/Yellow (starter wire) to 87 on the relay
Black/White (ignition/accessory wire) to pin 2 on the press switch

Pin 2 on toggle switch to 85 on the relay and 86 on relay/press switch ground to chassis ground

Press switch in (supplies ignition/accessory to vehicle), flick toggle switch (fires starter) and vehicle runs
To ‘turn vehicle off’, press the switch again to cut ignition/accessory power to vehicle

100%, will be a long journey but keen to chip away at it

Did the usual things with the engine bay, deleted the battery tray. Forgot Spot Weld drill bits existed so made a dogs breakfast of it but learnt my lesson when I was decluttering the firewall

Pulled the Motor and Box out last night, first time ever messing around with a Datsun Automatic so it was a learning curve to detach it from the car so I could pull it all out as one unit

And luckily found a buyer instantly so I won't have it hanging around, straight into the Ute and dropping it off this morning to the buyer

Appreciate the kind words!

I don't want this forum to sink into the land of lost like many other of my other favourite forums back in the day so I am trying to add content that people will get use out of for years to come. Everything in this thread is hosted on an old Tumblr Account that I use/used solely for hosting images. I deem it safe as I can't imagine that website will be going anywhere in a hurry and also, its FREE (up yours Photobucket/Flickr)

You might have noticed I have added to the Techwiki as well, it is mostly just information that I am actively researching for myself that I think would be beneficial to be brought into 2025

Bit of an update, very photo heavy as they tell most of the story

Started the 89- Grill Conversion, won't be well received by everyone but that's life

Also the beginnings of stripping the known problem areas down to see what panels/sections I'll need to replace. Sound Deadener/seam sealer was removed with a wire wheel on an Angle grinder and Sutton Spot Weld Drillbits which were awesome to use. This Video is why the passenger side of the Waterbox refused to drain.

Took on the job of removing the Cowl cover to get a better look at what was hiding underneath. The windscreen has been replaced at some stage (likely in the 90s/early 2000 as it doesn't look like the aftermarket windscreen I bought in ~2013) and they used bulk sealant between the glass, rubber and metal which made it an absolute PITA to remove. Couldn't find any photos in the techwiki/internet of this panel being removed so hopefully these photos help someone out in the future.

Here is a video of the cowl coming off in one piece once all the spot welds and bronze/lead work had been worked down

Have some contacts up and down the east coast of Australia (with one just a few kilometres from my house) who are able to help me out with decent sized rust cuts which is handy

Tackled the roof to see the extent of the rust
External evidence was enough to know that it needed to come apart. I will get cuts/sections from Donor cars in the future but I wanted to make sure I knew how everything fitted together so I can follow factory join locations for all of the Donor panels moving forward

Drilled out all 131 spot welds, removed all of the lead in the C Pillars and ground down the initial welds stabilising the roof skin to free it from the rest of the car

Once the skin is off it's easy to see how moisture gets into these areas of the roofs. I assume the factory sealer between the roof skin and the drip rails didn't last too long as I heard a story from someone who had a 1200 Sedan in the early 90s and his already had rust in the same place in the roof.

When I get the next bit of free time I'll tackle the rear quarters.

Very cool to see the roof structure without the skin

Generally 1200s don't rust the roof edges like that, however when rust gets that bad anything can happen

I used a Butane Torch and a cheap scraper (Video). Made sure to get a Face Shield and a half decent respirator as I've never messed around with lead before so didn't want to leave anything to chance.

Here's a video of what was under the Roof Skin
