5-spd question..

After completely reading and re-reading the transmission tech page here numerous times, I have a question.

Do all the later, smooth case transmissions have the "60" stamped on the bellhousing, or is that ONLY the 5-spd?

I am buying a car out of State and going to pick it up next Monday. The seller has offered me an A14 motor and (he claims) a 5-spd transmission. I looked at it breifly while I was there, and noticed it was a smooth case.

Thanks for your help. I don't want it if it's a 4-spd..

Duncan

Hi Duncan,

Both the smooth case 4 speeds and 5 speeds can have 60 series stamped on them.

Thanks. I was afraid of that. I guess I'll just have to see if I can move the shifter and find the 5 gears and reverse..

Yep - just be careful as when the nylon bushes slop in these you'd swear they have 6 forward gears and 2 reverses when they are on the floor!

Starting in 1980 or 1981 the underhood chassis plate lists the original transmission. Though it could have been changed ...

Thanks gents!

Actually, I'm buying a Morris Minor Van, (very rare here in the U.S.) and the seller has an A14 engine and a 5-spd trans (so he claims) that he wants $150 for the pair. I'm going to buy both anyway as I don't think I could lose, but I'd rather have the 5-speed as opposed to the 4 spd.

I appreciate the help.
