If I apply my brakes really hard the car kinda hunts side to side. What causes that? By really hard i mean 80 mph lock the front wheels up hard. Such as in a panic stop on the highway.

I've replaced everything in the front end. I had problems with the car pulling before i got new tires, since then it's never been a problem, but supposedly the camber isn't right on one of the front wheels because of some frame tweakage.

any ideas?

Under braking, pulling to one side usually means castor, camber or toe in is not correct (for castor and camber meaning even from side to side).

But I don't know about lock-ups ... is there any expectation that the car should slide straight?

I suspect it's an alignment thing, since the car pulled to the right before i got new tires and whatnot.

I was told the camber ( i think ) on the passenger side was not able to be set back to spec.

Is it possible that it's the steering gearbox having too much play? the amount of hunting is probably equal to the amount of play in the steering.

Try the Steering gearbox adjustment

Here what Haynes says:Quote:
Vehicle pulls to one side under braking
1. Defective, damaged or oil-contaminated disc pad on one side
2. Excessive wear of brake pad material or disc on one side
3. Loose or disconnected front suspension components
4. Defective caliper assembly. Inspect for stuck piston or damage
5. Disc pad-to-rotor adjustment needed [?]
6. Scored or out-of-round rotor
7. Loose caliper mounting
8. Incorrect adjustment of wheel bearings

Locking the brakes up at 80mph [about 130k]
Is this something you do a lot?
Would leaving a bigger gap to the vehicle in front help at all, or perhaps driving a little slower? Sounds like this is tough on the hardware, as well as the rubber.

It's not something I do often. I'm still getting a feel for how the car handles. I know it's hard on the hardware and tires. I don't try things like that where there are other cars around, the pulling has never been an issue in normal driving, other than sometimes the tires will grab a groove in the road and follow it while breaking conservatively.

I like my datsun, I'm not going to run it in to things.

I'm going to do this today, I've never maintained the steering gearbox and everything else has been replaced. And the play in the steering wheel IS excessive it's like driving an old dodge (almost).

Along those lines, how often to check/drain the steering gearbox? I doubt it's been done on mine in ages...

Don't go pressing that button.

THANKS!
