Hi, Guys,
Slightly off topic, but,
what will happen if the thermostat is taken of, which I have done.
Well, the guage does fluctuate at speeds, never going over the middle mark even at speeds of 140-160 kms on the open road.
My question is, Will this have an adverse effect on an engines lifespan?

Yes it will, leaving a thermometer out of a car will increase the amount of time the engine takes to warm up thereby increasing wear. The reason for the increased wear is that the oil wont lose some of its viscosity and wont flow into some of the vital components. Also the thermometer regulates the heat so the engine isnt constantly expanding and contracting which puts a strain on gaskets and welch plugs and the like. I remeber Alan Moffat talking about when he came into the pits at Bathurst, the engine was allowed to cool slightly and then when he went back out the engine blew up due to thermal shock.

Just to throw my two cents worth into this discussion, the last time I had a radiator flushed out the guy said never to spray water into the front of the radiator, through the grille, to clean dirt out as this only turns it into mud and cakes it on. Only clean it by using a blast of compressed air. Don't know if this could be a contributing factor, but it may be worth a look.
