The gas struts that keep the boot (tailgate) open is my best guess...

hi dave how is the old sunny coming along?
About the struts.
Do you mean the gas filled ones that are used to hold up hatches and some bonnets on new cars.
As there is a place in launie that is call Gas Struts Recharge, which I assume refill them with new gas, but I think it may be expensive to do.
As my 120y coupe uses them to hold up the hatch.
Maybe nissan can source some new ones for you, as they can still get a lot of new parts for old datto's.
Anyway bye for now.
P.S I cant wait for the next datto meet to get up and running, as I have cleaned up the engine bay of the white 120y coupe and have painted the motor aswell.

seeya, and GO THE DATTO!

Silly question i know, but have you tried your Nissan dealer? A lot of people say that they have tried "everywhere" but some seem to have forgotten about the dealer.
I seem to recall that there is a place in Sydney[?] that specialises in overhauling these types of gas strut.
Can anyone come up with more info?

Everywhere i mean in the greater Tasmanian area! I dont really want to start forking out lots of money for imported ones but i shall give them a try... Where would be the best place to start for the nissan dealer? Just down at the actually dealer yard and ask for a catalog for Nissan/Datsun parts etc?
Also if i am going to branch out i mite actually check Grand Auto wreckers in South Aussie on da phone...

And yes Nismo i have seen these peoples but the problem is that the previous owner seemed to have closed the boot on the struts (the ball joint has snapped off) thus bending them and rendering them usless....

Any other sugesstions??

Thanks guys!
Dave

hi datrat dave.
I tried Von Bibra Nissan here in Launie, when I bought my new bushes which go in the bottom sides of the gearlever to take out the slopyness in shifting.
They were very helpful.
When you ask for what you want, they put a special parts card thing under a computer, which comes up on the screen, and it is all detailed and referenced, to what part you are after.
So I would give them a try, but as you probably already know new parts can be very expensive.
hope I was of some help.
Bye for now.

Guys, on the POS WB pannel van I used to have, we found you can swap the bonnet struts from the XD - Xf or whatever falcon.

Because the upper tailgate was so light, the trick to finding the right 'weight' at the wreckers was to find a bonnet that just worked its way down slowly under it's own weight. Your gate would obvioulsy be heavier so you'd want to take that into account.

Think about it, lots of cars, lots of bonnets. Just measure up the open and closed lengths and go a'lookin.

i made some brackets up to adapt EB falcon wagon struts to mine it only needs one to hold it up (one rooted one) but i still have brackets on both side just that its too hard to shut with both in. i got photos if you are just after a general idea
