Morning all,

Are all A-series main caps the same? Reason being, i've got an A15 block and crank and no main caps, can i use the ones out of my A12?

Thanks guys.

i would have a stab and say yes. i'm picking you already know this, but if you use different main caps from a different motor you will be up for some extra machining costs to line bore (i think thats what its called) them with your block.

1 and 5 are the same, wider than 2 and 4 tho ( have a recessed middle i think)
2 and 4 are the same (flat usual ones)
but 3 has both edges shaped at a downwards angle and wider than 1,2,4,5 - so no their not all the same!

You can just see in this photo that the middle cap has its edges shaped down, beveled is that the word? not sure why but it does ...

I stand corrected if ive said the wrong thing here....

I reckon you will need to line bore it if you swap caps. But if the plastigage reads right, then maybe not.

Use a bit of silicon if there close just to get the seal.

All of the five bearing A series blocks use the same main bearings & rear oil seal, so the caps will be interchangeable, but i don't know if they are all the same.
I can't be sure that the later, larger engines didn't use caps made from a higher grade material than the 1200 /A12, or if they were more 'stout' in their construction. Only a direct comparison will clarify the latter question.
